BUSH SCREWS THE INDIANS.
White House staffer Jennifer Farley, Deputy Associate Director of the
White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, informed one Shoshone
Tribal Chairman that the bill was red hot . The significance of the
issue to the White House is apparent: Copies of Assistant Secretary of
Interior Stephen J. Griles calendars reflect meetings with Interior
Department legal staff, including Bush s Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
nominee, William Myers, regarding Western Shoshone Trespass (Dann
Sisters) just six months before the Department of Interior started
military-style seizures of livestock owned by Western Shoshone
traditionalists, including grandmothers Mary and Carrie Dann.

The land base at issue is the third largest gold producing area in the
world and cited by a 1999 Interior report as the number one investment
opportunity for extraction companies. It is also the site where the
nation s nuclear waste repository would be located, Yucca Mountain, and
the home to the Nevada Test Site and Federal Counterterrorism Facility
where the Bush Administration has talked of reopening nuclear testing.
Both Bush and his political advisor Karl Rove, have made personal visits
to Nevada in the last thirty days.

1. HE IS SCREWING EVERYBODY. But we have screwed them since
the first white guy set his foot on the AMERICAS.

The only difference is that Bush does it with more relish than most other people.

2. Doesn't Washington EVER get tired of fucking the Native Americans?
The history is just one incredible crime after another after another after another. This stuff is just the latest incredible affront to justice and decency, and it isn't just the GOP slugs who're at fault. The trend has been the same no matter who dominates Congress or who sits in the Oval Office.

The treatment of Native Americans is an open sore on the reputation of everyone who has been involved.

I have nothing to do with those people whatsoever but I can recognise injustice when I smell it, and this stinks as much as Iraq or Enron or any of the crap Washington has perpetrated.

4. I hope no one on this forum
roots for the Washington Redskins. That is such an offensive term and denotes a total lack of sensitivity towards Native Americans. One small but telling example of how this society disses them.

5. Goes deeper than you realize -- Barrick mining
The article mentioned that the area in question was the third largest producer of gold in the world. Most of this mining is done by Barrick, a Canadian company, which under a 19th century mining law pays almost no taxes (this is largely the fault of Minority Whip Harry Reid, as a Nevada politician will do damn near anything to protect mining in this state.

Know who else is a major shareholder in Barrick? The BFEE.

8. Did Myers get confirmed?
What's up with that guy?

I know he was nominated for a lifetime appointment to the 9th circuit - the court that oversees most Western states' environment.

9. I'm tempted to say "yes"
But, to be perfectly honest, I have a hard enough time keeping up with the judges in the local family courts.

11. BTW Why is Harry Reid interested in a 19th century Canadian law?
Does Nevada have the same law? WTF?

14. Not a Canadian law, a federal law
Passed to promote the settlement of the west. The fee for a mining claim on federal land (NV is 88% federal land) is something like $1 an acre.

13. Hey, don't talk shit about Harry.
The guy's a personal hero of mine. Barrick, in Nevada, is kind of a sad case. North American minerals mining would be unprofitable if fees were payed like every other industry; there were massive layoffs of the mining industry here in the 70's and 80's because the copper and silver industries would have died. Nevada has one county (White Pine, I believe), that is the size of Massachussetts and has only 923 residents (900 miners, 23 prostitutes). The death of mining here would mean the death of most of the state.

Copper is still unprofitable with tax, but during the Clinton years gold and silver became profitable once more and canadian Barrick moved in.

Trivia: Harry Reid's dad was a gold miner; Hary used to help him out in an old-fashioned tunnel mine. His mom was the only woman in Searchlight not a prostitute; her job was washing the sheets from the brothels.
