snips from a recent letter to a local city paper in Alabama which isn't online yet:
<snip> Dear Editor: Recently I attended a gathering on the Tuscaloosa county courthouse steps promoted by Mr. Gerald Allen in reference to a bill he is sponsoring that would ban same-sex marriages in the state of Alabama by constitutional amendment. Mr. Allen was supported by a local black minister named Mr. Moore. When Mr. Moore spoke, he emphasized that this is not about hate: "This is not about hate in any way."
Let's see: You single out a minority sector of your citizens; you attempt by law to take away from them some of their very civil rights; you attempt by law to openly discriminate against them because they are different from the majority; you attempt by law to treat them as lesser citizens.
<snip> I am a hard-working, tax-paying, patriotic, God-fearing, family-oriented, gay citizen of this country and the great state of Alabama. I am offended that politicians would want to chip away at our very civil rights as guaranteed by the Constitution--ALL for political gain. What gain? This issue is a complete distraction from the very grave and serious issues that are currently facing our nation. This is an issue that is being used to divide the voting public.
<snip> We are being exploited by people who could care less what kind of citizens and family members we are. And, for any black minister in the state of Alabama to support the limitation of civil rights toward a minority group of people is beyond my ability to comprehend. <snip>
