Question: Who came up with the HOMELAND crap? Why
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 02:09 PM by LittleApple81
was is approved without a whimper? This homeland crap irks me... it is so, so, so...fascist.
Who came up with it?
They use it the same way that the Nazis used it too. There was a woman last night (I think she was substituting for Lou Dobbs) and she talked about it as "defending the Homeland" What the Cheney?????

1. Are you talking about the word "homeland" itself?
If so, I agree, and I'd like to know myself - although it sounds a lot like the "fatherland" of Nazi Germany.

Deutscheland, Deutscheland uber Alles...

21. Nazi protected "homeland" from "terrorists"
after the burning of the Reichstag building. History repeats itself - at least in terms of the propaganda.

4. it was a term that our idiot president put forth

5. Garry Hart and Warren Rudman and Joe Lieberman
The "homeland" language runs through their terrorism report. After 9/11 the Bush administration didn't do a fucking thing except cut and paste whatever was lying around. I think Joementum Lieberman got it from Hart/Rudman also.

So the Bush people didn't come up with it. That said, if they were not Nazis at heart they would have excised the language when the proposals became real.

7. Doesn't matter to me WHO thought of it. The term is jingoistic crap.
Far from making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, just hearing the word "homeland" gives me the shivering creeps.

10. They gave a fairly accurate assessment of our weaknesses
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 02:32 PM by Solly Mack
that doesn't mean I agree with "homeland security"

what you have to understand is...Bush and Cheney refused to read or act on the report. They refused to meet with the hart-rudman commission...all prior to September 2001... and a lot of what hart-rudman stated was airport security..how lax it was, as well as other things...addressed issues (prior) that played a part in the September 11th attacks.

Then they told congress to stop working on creating a homeland defense agency(May of 2001)....but later Bush takes credit for creating the dept. of homeland security.

12. The department is OK and a good idea...if they could execute it
correctly, which they can't. But the NAME, oh the NAME. It contributes to our image as a fascist nation. And we don't need any help.

13. I agree....under a different name and a DIFFERENT mentality
such an agency would be better...provided civil liberties were viewed as more important than security.

15. Heimat is the German word for
'homeland.' It's usually associated with schmaltzy sentimental grade B movies. I call out gov't's new arm "Der Heimatsicherheitsamt."

17. Oct 1999: "The ANSER Institute for Homeland Security is founded"
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 03:38 PM by Minstrel Boy
Always thought this was an interesting example of military/industrial "precognition."

From Paul Thompson's timeline:

October 1999
The ANSER Institute for Homeland Security is founded. This institute claims to be “leading the debate through executive-level education, public awareness programs, workshops for policy makers and online publications: a weekly newsletter and the Journal of Homeland Security, which features articles by senior government leaders and leading homeland security experts.” As their webpage makes clear, the first mention of the phrase “homeland security” in a US context came only one month earlier. This institute, which has deep roots in the Air Force, has received tens of millions of government dollars in support. (Online Journal, 6/29/02) They talked about a “second Pearl Harbor” long before 9/11. Their own website touts their role in the creation of this department, but the media has completely failed to cover the story. (Institute for Homeland Security website; Institute for Homeland Security website FAQ; Online Journal 6/29/02)
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/topic.jsp?topic=september_11

From ANSER's website:

On April 23, 2004, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) selected Analytic Services Inc to establish and operate the Homeland Security Institute (HSI), a new Federally Funded Research and Development Center. The HSI will assist the Department in formulating and addressing important homeland security issues, particularly those involving policy and security where scientific, technical and analytical expertise is required.

Creation of the HSI was recommended by the National Research Council’s 2002 report “Making the Nation Safer,” and subsequently mandated by statute in the Homeland Security Act of 2002. ANSER was selected via a competitive process managed by the HSI’s primary sponsor, the DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology.

HSI will be co-located with corporate headquarters in Shirlington, Virginia, and will be managed as a separate operating unit of Analytic Services Inc, which is the parent of the ANSER Institute for Homeland Security.

President and CEO of ANSER, Ruth David:
She worked for a number of years at Sandia Laboratories. In 1995 she joined the Central Intelligence Agency as head of the Directorate of Science and Technology. In 1998 she joined Analytic Services Inc. (ANSER) as President and Chief Executive Officer. ANSER is a nonprofit public service research institute headquartered in Arlington, VA. ANSER's business focus is national security. Dr. David serves on the Defense Science Board, the National Security Agency Advisory Board, the NSF Naval Studies Board, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Technical Advisory Board, and the Technical Advisory Board for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Also of note from the timeline:

May 8 2001
Bush entrusts Cheney to head the new Office of National Preparedness, a part of FEMA. This office is supposed to oversee a “national effort” to coordinate all federal programs for responding to domestic attacks. Cheney says to the press, “One of our biggest threats as a nation” may include “a terrorist organization overseas. We need to look at this whole area, oftentimes referred to as homeland defense.”

23. Bush has used several terms from World War II
"Homeland" being one. "Ground Zero" as the term for the site of collapsed world trade center is the same name used for the site of the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima. And we all know about the term "Axis".

24. more appropriate
would be my choice: the Committee for State Security. Its initials in Russian: KGB

Or at least go with something neutral, like National Defense or National Preparedness. Homeland has weird connotations for a lot of americans.
