Did anybody see Paul Newman PIMP SLAP FAUX re: Franken
This is too funny.

FROM TODAY'S NEW YORK TIMES

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR
Paul Newman Is Still HUD
By PAUL NEWMAN

The Fox News Network is suing Al Franken, the political satirist, for using the phrase "fair and balanced" in the title of his new book. In claiming trademark violation, Fox sets a noble example for standing firm against whatever.

Unreliable sources report that the Fox suit has inspired Paul Newman, the actor, to file a similar suit in federal court against the Department of Housing and Urban Development, commonly called HUD. Mr. Newman claims piracy of personality and copycat infringement.

In the 1963 film "HUD," for which Mr. Newman was nominated for an Academy Award, the ad campaign was based on the slogan, "Paul Newman is HUD." Mr. Newman claims that the Department of Housing and Urban Development, called HUD, is a fair and balanced institution and that some of its decency and respectability has unfairly rubbed off on his movie character, diluting the rotten, self-important, free-trade, corrupt conservative image that Mr. Newman worked so hard to project in the film. His suit claims that this "innocence by association" has hurt his feelings plus residuals.

I never realized what a well developed since of humor he had. He is truly an American treasure.

P.S. Like the women here on DU didn't have enough reasons to swoon over Mr. Newman.

23. A woman I used to know in Miami met him
She was a reporter for one of the local rags and she was assigned to interview him while he was filming a movie in Miami. He invited to his trailer and said, "Why don't I make lunch while we're talking?" He proceeded to whip up a gourmet meal while seeing to it that she had soft drinks, was comfortable, etc. She was a puddle on the floor by the time the interview was through.

13. Pimp slap ~ Isn't there a more benign phrase that can be used
Violence seems to permeate every aspect of our life, even here at DU. I just don't find these type of phrases appealing. As far as I'm concerned this type of attitude is what has gotten us Bush* DU is not WWE

38. Agreed! I'm no prude, but "talking street" is not cute or funny here...
"Pimp-slap," "bitch-slap," "bitch ass," "X is Y's bitch" and other street expressions appearing more frequently on DU are degrading, violent and particularly inappropriate among folks who consider themselves a bit more enlightened and pro-peace.

There are a hell of a lot more colorful words or phrases available, all of them appropriate. Let's try just a bit harder to use them.

41. my favorite Newman line isn't from his movies
it was about his marriage. When asked why he was faithful, Newman replied: why go out for hamburger when you can enjoy steak at home?

I first heard it from my husband who, in his own endearing way, is a smooth liberal operator much like Mr. Newman...

I have always respected them for distancing themselves from the Hollywood hoopla. They have lived in Connecticut for years. Back in the 1970s I saw him in the pits at Watkins Glen Grand Prix. OOOH--swoon, I do adore Paul Newman!!

33. Speaking of the lawsuit...
Just heard an interesting spin on this issue on "Fresh Air" today.
Can't remember the guys name but he's a linguist (sic?) and his comment was that Fox may have a case against Franken. However, they may have to admit that thier "fair and balanced" TM is not an accurate discription of thier product,
but an obvious hype which is known to be not completely factual which is often used in advertising. That or they will need to prove that Franken was trying to associate himself with Fox News (laughable), or that thier news is "fair and balanced" (hardly proovable). That was the gist. I probably got some things wrong, but I hope Franken doesn't settle like Spike TV did. I want to see
those blow-hards on the stand, under oath explain how they are more "fair and balanced" than the other news services.

37. Thank you, Paul Newman
I never thought in 1,000,000 years (certainly not back in the ancient times of 1999) that I would be this greatful to see any celebrity left or right, using their stature to push issues-du-jour.

But that was a lifetime ago and in another country. Now that I have seen the VRWC anaconda (or whatever you wish to call it -- tacit, now openly operating conspiracy) strangle the discourse in this nation by bullying, intimidation, and the applications of $$$$$, any time someone can get a cymbal beat among their cacophonous brass orchestra, it is a small victory for liberty.
