Some useful Definitions for Political Discussion

liberal



Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

tolerant


Inclined to tolerate the beliefs, practices, or traits of others

tolerance



The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.

respect



VERB: 1. To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.
2. To avoid violation of or interference with:
NOUN 1. A feeling of appreciative, often deferential regard; esteem.
2. Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.

deference


1. Submission or courteous yielding to the opinion, wishes, or judgment of another.
2. Courteous respect.

courteous


Characterized by gracious consideration toward others. See polite.

polite


1. Marked by or showing consideration for others, tact, and observance of accepted social usage.
2. Refined; elegant

These adjectives mean mindful of, conforming to, or marked by good manners. Polite and mannerly imply consideration for others and the adherence to conventional social standards of good behavior

prejudice


(i.e., including "southern" bias)
NOUN: 1a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. b. A preconceived preference or idea.
2. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions.
3. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.
4. Detriment or injury caused to a person by the preconceived, unfavorable conviction of another or others.

bigot



One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

sexism



1. Discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women.
2. Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.

discrimination



Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice

stereotype


NOUN: 1. A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
2. One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.
VERB 1. To give a fixed, unvarying form to.

homophobia


1. Fear of or contempt for lesbians and gay men.
2. Behavior based on such a feeling.

phobia


1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.
2. A strong fear, dislike, or aversion.

projection



Psychology a. The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or suppositions to others b. The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or desires to someone or something as a naive or unconscious defense against anxiety or guilt.

4. That's good
I would have to suggest that I think as "Liberals" we may be tolerant of conservatives, or whatever...but as Democrats people here are not "tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others" when if comes to the Bush administration and even Republicans as a group.

So if you follow the definitions - most people here are bigots in that respect.

Like or not.

5. Yes, many here do fit the definition of
bigot, yet they would argue they do not. Maybe a look at the definitions would be useful. Maybe not.:shrug:
