Surely we're made of sterner stuff than that.

What amuses me about these posts. . .
is how the same poster will then wail about how "the sheeple" are blindly following Shrub and how it can't possibly be true that so many people support BushCo, when the truth is so much of that support is simply frightened people who look to the pRetzeldent in hopes that the office -- no matter who's in it -- will give them the stability and vicarious strength to make it through these "dark times."

But the frightened people on this side -- whose legitimate concern is the immediate threat to their civil and constitutional liberties -- can't see the fear in their neighbor's eyes, this fear of the unknown which their neighbor feels is so immediate and has such a blazing image on their conscious and in their fears.

4. This is a fairly objectionable sentiment

I'm glad your life is tranquil, but there is much for even non-hysterics to fear in American politics. We imprison people at the highest rate on the planet. Given that established national trait, just how much more right-wing can we afford to get?

American politics has consequences for Americans (and others) and some consequences are legitimately frightening.

(The prospect of being further alienated from your own society is also rather scary, since our society is our last refuge when all else fails.)

79. au contraire ...
Fear is a survival-based biological reaction to threat. Personally, I have been in some egregiously dangerous situations and have been very afraid. And what scares one person, because of the uniqueness of each person's experience, may just cause another to yawn.

Sometimes, I think folk are merely using dramatic license though.

8. nothing to fear but fear itself
Not to say that fear isn't a normal human response to immediate threats to one's safety or that of a loved one. But the only response from a political foe to expressed fear will be to exploit your fear and to call into question your stalwartness.

7. nothing wrong with admitting fear
Yes, people probably do overuse that image a bit, but it should be ok to express fear or scariness since that is such a normal reaction to all the chaos lately. We need to toughen up but not turn a blind eye to the many scenarios that trigger these fears and scariness.

9. AMEN!
I remember last fall when there was a rash of posts with a subject like, "Suddenly I'm really afraid of (insert primary candidate's name)!"

It eventually became a total joke, but it taught me to distrust the expression of fear in any subject line. :)

11. seems a little premature at this early stage
But you should replace your fear- which is paralysing to the mind- with thoughtful meditation. Then you might better see your options should the draft ever actually rear it's ugly head up again. But, really, expressing fear either now or later is self-defeating.

12. Me too scared.... got a grandson not far from draft age...
YOUNG people NEVER see that there is an end eventually... they think they are invincable, they are strong (that's good), nothing bad will happen. That will change soon.............

I don't stand and shake in my boots; I'm a tough old broad. I dish out like I get. I don't go around wringing my hands but I do take time to calm down with something pleasant when things DO get heavy.

There are all sorts of things to be edgy about. Especially these days. Perhaps if you are a younger person, it doesn't seem that way to you...nothing worried me when I was young that's for sure. It's all different now.

I worry about Social security; about work for my kids/grandkids; about the war and my said g.son; about healthcare; about housing and homelessness. shit. There's plenty to get freaked over and make me lose sleep from. I take it day by day and get involved in helping change things the best way I can........but my days are running out.

13. In the words of an immortal Democratic leader...
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."

FDR, March 1933.

Bush wants you to be afraid. That's uh...the "plan". So you're telling me he can say "Mission Accomplished" with regard to you? Nice.

As you may or may not know, Rush and his freeper disrupters love to characterize us as scared and afraid. It helps bolster their spirits when they think they've already won because they know the value of "terror which paralyzes".

Do him a favor and put your fear in the subject line so he can find you easily. Okay? Thanks!

...then you're a carrier. Save your immature putdowns for someone 'afraid' of them. And yes, there probably are children- as legally defined as- here at DU. But, for your info, I was speaking of the kinder in homes where fear is present. Perhaps you have such a home. I will agree, however, that 'truth trumps' lies, but only in the absence of fear.

55. The Frightened Come Out At Night
So, I'm a 'disruptor' now for calling all of us on our tendency to play the fear card--- against ourselves, no less. What utter lunacy. What, in fact, a disrupting ploy it is to call out 'disruptor' when confronted with a trait we don't like having exposed...exposed. The trolls who've attacked should be afraid- very afraid- of... their own irrational fears. Don't succumb- not on their word.

72. Let Us Reassure the Fearing...
...yet not promote fear. Anyone second that?

It has occured to me that this is a community eager to support concerned people, not condemn or minimize those who come here to have their fears heard and assuaged. we live in tremulous times, after all.

76. What's the point?
Seriously, exactly what are you trying to achieve here?

Did you come here to talk politics or do you think this assinine post is funny?

Look around you, you're in the wrong neighborhood. :nuke:

77. other than engaging in piling on, what is your point?
My point is in the thread header. I make no apologies to trolls who feel it is their duty to attack in support of other trolls. However, there was enough support for my post to render yours' and the others' irrevelent. You must have posted an 'I'm scared' or an 'it's scary' post before- the others must have too.

84. looks like the trolls have left- now is a good time to wrap...
...this thread up. It was a good thread and to the credit of DUers here, there hasn't been one single 'it's scary' or 'I'm scared' post since this thread started- at least not one that didn't come from a troll. But, please read post #76 for my final thoughts. It was not my intent to keep any Duer from expressing fearful thoughts- at least it isn't now. DUers are here to comfort good people and that should apply as well to people telling about their trepidations.
