Fahrenheit 9/11. A Review. There are things in this film.... (Long)
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 04:50 AM by cease_fire
Fahrenheit 9/11 A Review –

There are no secrets – Just things that you don’t know yet…

Today, Vice President Dick Cheney dropped an F Bomb on a Democratic Senator.

Tonight, Michael More dropped THE F-Bomb on the Bush Administration.

The following is not an ego stroke – I simply want you to be able to judge the source (Me) so you can better understand my perspective.

I am white, successfully self-employed, and an independent feature filmmaker. I was at NYU when the first Gulf War claimed the hearts and minds of 2 dear friends, and was speaking at a NYU alumni reunion when the CNN Night Vision enhanced web cam ushered in Shock and Awe.

I have no love of politics, but when this government’s math stopped adding up, I was quickly drawn into the vortex of the DU.

While lurking, I’ve seen the tell-tale signs of thought-leaders, and the outrage of patriots at the very edge of reason. Even while I’ve been carefully considering all sides of just about every post ever written in the last 3 months – I haven’t had much to contribute.

Until Now.

Despite the fact that Fandango trailers bother me, and Loews theaters will soon be another statistic in the monopolizing of our media, my business partner and soul mate decided to brave the midnight showing of Fahrenheit 9/11.

We arrived early, and surprisingly found a fabulous seat center row, center theater. Only about 50 other folks shared the theater with us, all looking around nervously – watching for protesters, I suspect.

But, as midnight drew closer, wave after wave of every type of person walked up the aisle.

By 5 minutes of 12 – the fire marshal was “escorting” folks to another theater where an impromptu showing was quickly arranged.

The house was packed.

And the mood? Positively electric!

Though it’s hot in New Jersey this time of year, the air tonight was chilly. As the audience settled into their seats, jackets came off – revealing t-shirts with American Flags, and silk screen prints with “Any Body But Bush” emblazoned across chests and shoulders.

Almost a party. Almost a good time. And it got better before…

Michael Moore’s film begins in a masterful but predictable way. For the first 10 minutes or so, he leads us through a survey of a stolen presidential election, an impotent Senate, a failing, vacationing president, and an atmosphere of American political malaise…

Just like any other day in the US.

We’ve seen this material and have heard this testimony before. Indeed, as we watched, I was amused by the audience reactions. Laughter, Mirth, and a true appreciation of the irony of an unqualified leader doing just a little bit of damage to the Institution of Government.

Then the screen just stopped glowing. No images.

Just sound.

We’ve seen what happened on 9/11/01 over and over again. We’ve watched with horror, disbelief and grief.

But you’ve never heard it. Not like this.

Unless you were at ground zero that day – you’ve never felt it.

From behind us, a shriek of an aircraft in a power dive shook the stadium seating. It passed over our heads and into the dark screen.

Then it exploded. And then lower Manhattan screamed.

And then it happened again.

There is no use trying to describe this sensation to you. It rattled my chair.

And it ripped my heart into shreds.

Everything old, everything healed – is new again.

As the images begin to re-appear on the screen, the soundtrack whispers into the background. It becomes just quiet enough so you can hear the sobs - the crying of the people sitting next to you.

Even in a theater full of young people, the reverence and anguish was unmistakable.

And that’s when Fahrenheit 9/11 really begins.

If you’ve been a regular visitor of DU for long, chances are that you’ve been witness to most of the articulated discussions of issues that Michael Moore presents in the film.

With that said – there’s a lot here that you haven’t seen. And for the parts that you have – you’ve never seen it like this.

We spend a great deal of time here at the DU debating different perspectives, and every once in a while, a situation comes along that gives us cause to band together and support one another, or rejoice in a victory for our cause.

F-9/11 does something more, something that’s difficult for us to do, with our text based medium.

It shows us – the implications, and the results.

As the United States War Machine prepares for its inevitable confrontation with Saddam Hussein, we get a glimpse of the humanity that our coalition of the willing is about to destroy.

Yes, there are children in Iraq that fly kites, go to amusement parks and ride Ferris wheels (This little tidbit didn’t make it onto Fox), families cooking out, riding bikes, getting married, and singing songs.

All the while, the US War Machine spools it’s turbines up to full throttle, and unleashes utter devastation on Iraqis who are…

a lot like us.

The reports of Moore’s death as a talented director have been, in a phrase, Highly Exaggerated.

This is a masterful work of film making. Slick, Polished, well paced, full of vim and vigor, and -

not anywhere as unfair as the critics on the Right would have you think.

It’s clear when Moore is pontificating. It’s clear when he’s poking fun and razzing the establishment. What’s so very telling, and in my opinion, so very clever is his silence.

Michael Moore doesn’t rub political salt into the continuous incompetence of this administration, or it’s behavior.

He doesn’t have to.

He doesn’t need to say anything when the AG starts singing his own national fight song (Let the Eagles Soar!). He doesn’t need to comment on GWB’s “I call you my base” fund raising dinner.

He let’s the “talkies” do the work – and the effect is maddening.

I’ve never heard an “Oh Jesus” or “What the F**K?” muttered from an audience member during Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter.

Tonight, these utterances came after every scene.

Have you ever looked behind you in a crowded theater during a sad moment in a film? Then you’ll understand what I’m about to describe.

A very gracious woman who gave her only soon to the service of the United States Marine Corps decided to take a trip to the White House only a few months after her son was lost in a Black Hawk crash.

While in the area in front of the White House, she happens upon a woman who has erected an ad-hoc shrine to protest the war.

The two woman break down almost immediately, but then…

Some “person” which can only be described as a “Do-Good-er with ill intentions” decides that this meeting is a “Set-up”.

This 3rd woman cries “This is Staged! This is Staged!” and tries to position herself between the camera and our 2 grieving mothers.

Meanwhile, the mother who had buried her son that spring lets this representative of the Thought Police know that her boy was killed in Iraq.

Unbelievably, this Monster wants proof! So she then counters with “Where? What Date? Hmmmm? Come On! Where? What Date?”

“Karballah, April 2nd.”

“Oh.”

I turned around, startled by all of the sniffing and explicatives coming from the upper level of the theaters.

And there, in the bright-reflected light of the film’s screen, hundreds of cheeks, streaked with tears – faces contorted in to rage.

This film will mark a turning point in our country's consciousness.

I could spend the better part of a week coming to grips with what I saw early this morning. And I’m sure that I’ll spend the better part of the rest of this year doing everything that I can to stop the degeneration of the land I live in.

But let me leave you with a few thoughts, and some of the conclusions I drew from this film.

We actually have been duped.

There’s no conjecture here. You don’t need to stretch your imagination or suddenly become “un-stubborn” in order to connect the dots.

There’s no benevolent Blue Blooded family trying to make our world a better, safer place. Even though that’s what they’d have you believe.

The Bush Family's legacy of greed, and their perfect execution of power manipulation, good old boy network, and their lemming constituency have succeeded in usurping power from the citizens of this country.

You don’t need to be wary of this conclusion. You don’t need to be humble amongst your friends, family, republican brother-in-law or right-winged co-workers.

Not any more.

We’re about to see a whole branch of our government, of corporate controlled media and fundamentalist right-wing groups leap into damage control mode with a flurry of denials and outrage like we’ve never seen.

Well, maybe not like we’ve ever seen, but…

The point is – it’s all there. Sure, there’s humor, sarcasm, irony…

There’s juxtaposition of images and events in order to amplify emotions, in order to illustrate ideas and foster connections between the “Players”.

But there’s no showmanship in the testimony of our troops that languish in Iraq, wondering what the hell they’re doing there.

Michael Moore didn’t write the script for the roving Marine Corps Recruiters – the ones that, well, I’m not sure that there’s a stronger expression for the word “Lie”…

But after seeing this film, there ought to be.

He didn’t need to. So he doesn’t.

Because he’s got this "thing" working for him.

I’m sure some of the Bush Administration wonders what it’s like to have truth on their side.

I’m sorry if you just now got over the tragedy of 9/11. Maybe you’ve found peace with the state of our world, even the hypocrisy and failure of our democracy.

If you’d like to continue, blissfully unaware of just how much trouble your way of life is in, then don’t see this film.

On the other hand, if you need just a little push…

You know, just a little incentive to start a march on Washington…

Then this is it.

I'm in awe over how the fates had Moore in complete control of his directorial chops just in time for the biggest state crime in history and it's subsequent expose by Moore.

Nice work, says another independent filmmaker/NYU escapee who saw a NJ midnight screening...

I noticed the Bin Laden brother at the airport footage that's in the trailer wasn't in the movie... I wonder if there's any more of that...

Bush is truly FUCKED. Even a staunch Bush supporter could NOT vote for him after seeing this movie unless he's literally a GOPBOT. The battle for middle America is over. We won.

Thank you, Michael.

91. Battlelines are drawn -
and we have the truth on our side. But the battle isn't over. Not with every talking head and pundit screaming "lies" out there.

The Battle won't be won until the unelected fraud and his henchmen are out of the White House.

117. A lot of young people who might not be political will see this film.
There is a hard core of people who won't change their opinion no matter what. Forget them. It's the people who wouldn't have voted before, but see the film because they are curious who will make an impact. I don't believe anyone could be apathetic after experiencing what I did today.

127. very simple response.
"If you didn't experience it then you can't have a valid opinion about it. Period."

Trust me, this ends *countless* opinion debates. That's why I read material from both sides of any issue, especially the opposing side if there is one. It is the first and foremost thing to do in the pursuit of a)science b)war/debate c)progress/planning. To do otherwise is to be stuck in the 12th century, the Dark Ages, behind Galileo and his revolution of the importance of experience.

138. are you kidding?
They might not see it in a theater, but I'll bet the attraction'll be like pornography. When it comes out on dvd they'll all be lurking around trying to get a "peek" without getting found out. But then again does the USA PAtriot Act allow the RNC to find out what vids you've been renting??

46. Ditto That
Wow, you may be quite the writer also. What a GREAT read. I am now convinced that Michael Moore is some higher soul or starseed sent to change the world. What he has done with this movie may make all the difference in the world. Even the clips of it are riveting - playing while the likes of Scarborough and others call it lies. You barely here what they are saying because the clips are so jaw-dropping.

Jon Stewart asked Michael Moore last night if the "man" was keeping him down - and he laughed and said something to the effect of "I think the man is going down".

One of the best posts I've ever read on DU - Welcome. :hi:

43. I'm trying to prepare
I'm taking two travel packets of tissues - will that be enough? I'm also wearing my Shock and Awe shirt. It's the famous Abu Ghraib prisoner standing on a box with electrodes titled "Shock and Awe". Underneath there are pictures of Rumsferatu, BushCo and Crashcart titled "NOW who is the axis of evil?"

Thank you for your marvelous review - I needed this to get ready for tonight.

47. wonderful
good job. Thank you for the warning that seeing this movie will renew that sense of helplessness and horror felt on that fateful day. Whenever I hear the neocons hollering HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN I just want to scream; the images of that horrific day will stay with me the rest of my days. There really is no getting over it.

54. Great post but.......
most of us here have KNOWN this all along. WE were not duped. We knew the weasel was lying from the git-go. We KNEW he stole the election. We knew he had a 96 IQ score without seeing it written in a report somewhere. We knew he had no idea what HE was doing. This has been a three and a half year battle for us. I have not seen the film yet but have all the faith in the world that MM did a great job on it cause he's done it before on film and in books. And yes, I believe bush was behind 911 since 911. I cannot wait to see the film!

55. Hey Hey onecitzen,
Please understand, I'm not trying to imply any lack of knowledge here at DU. I've just been here a few months.

I was just seeking to talk from my perspective, and not lessen any contribution of facts or data that's been disseminated here, already.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm sure you'll enjoy the show!

63. mmm, I don't think that
was what I meant. I probably shouldn't post when I am as down as I am today which is rare for me.

As I said a very long 31/2 years for some of us. I'm tired of fighting and trying to convince people about bush. I welcome MM's film.....I really, really do, more than I can tell you. I wish I could see it but it won't be here for a very long time, if ever. THAT depresses me too.

Anyway, sorry if I came off rude. Didn't mean to. Just frustrated I guess. Welcome to DU! I promise I won't be a bitch tomorrow.

It brings the experience so alive.

I'm going to the matinee this afernoon, and I'm so excited and maybe even a little apprehensive about it, what with stirring up the 911 emotions again, and stoking the fire of my loathing and revulsion for Bushco.

I was thinking that tonight, after the movie opens to a wider audience, we'd see a boatload of posters each starting their own review threads. I even thought about asking Skinner if we could consolidate all of the individual review threads into one gigantic one.

Now, I couldn't imagine seeing your post buried in among the many others. It truly stands on its own.

A :toast: to you, cease_fire! Well done!

66. Wonderful post and review.
People who are screaming on the right that this is a fictional film need to see it for themselves. I've responded in other forums to the people claiming this film is fiction by telling them that people in the film are using their own words, there are no actors, there are no scripts for the people in the film. Beyond Moore's choices as a director, and his own narration, everyone there is speaking their own words and acting on their own volition. Your eloquent review illustrates that beautifully!

Someone here on DU suggested that it would be fine to bring a 12 year old girl to the film this week. I cautioned them to screen it first, before taking a child to it... simply because of the intensity of some parts of the film. Your description of re-opening the wounds of the 9/11 attack, and the war images, should give any parent pause before they take their child to the film before seeing it and deciding if it's right for their own kids. Better to wait for DVD, where the child can see it in an emotionally safe environment... Kids were one of the most traumatized of our society from the 9/11 attacks. Thanks for your expressive description of those scenes.

and Welcome to DU!

101. and if seen at home on DVD, kids can see it in small doses
with breaks for discussion amongst the family. I was going to take my 13 yr old son, but he like to ask questions during films, it took us forever to get through The Pianist. Now he wants all of his friends to watch The Pianist when they come over, he tells them that it is important that they know this happened. We always check with the parents first and then the boys watch it upstairs with my son as the wise old sage. I guess we will wait for the DVD because he will get a lot more out of it that way, rather than just the shock value of seeing it all at once on the big screen. But Mom can't wait, going sometime this week. My husband has PTSD so after reading this he is reconsidering because of the plane scene you described. We don't need him freaking out in the theatre.

76. Your review was very eloquent, you have brought tears to my
eyes. We are going to see the film on Sunday.

Just as the Dorthea Lange photos of the young mother and her children during the depression and the pictures of the young Vietnamese girl running after being hit by napalm have so strongly influenced public opinion, perhaps Michael Moore will achieve the same passion and results.

Thank you so much for this post..I hope and pray that Americans are awakening to the horrors that this administration has wrought upon us and indeed the entire world.

Regards..ig

81. One objection: the film does not begin with 911, it begins with frame one
Gore winning Florida, then John Ellis at Faux changing the results, Brokaw apologizing, the joint senate....To me it was emotionally gripping - and very pertinent.
Other than that, beautifully written and very well captured.

102. I just got home from F-911, booted up my iBook and read your review
And the goosebumps that I had during the entire movie returned.

After much thought on my long drive home from Jupiter to Boca, I tried to determine what my strongest feeling was after the movie. I think the best way to describe it is that I felt TRAUMATIZED.

The black screen and the sounds of 9-11 were the most powerful to me and I wept. As a Floridian, the 2000 election stuff made me enraged all over again. The scenes from Iraq were horrifying and broke my heart for all the people there. How senseless and tragic - those beautiful young faces and their haunted eyes.

The truth is TRAUMATIC, people, thank god Michael Moore has the courage to tell it - strongly and so heartbreakingly.

Thank you too, for your beautiful words that express so many of my thoughts and feelings better than I could ever do. How generous of you to give us all this gift.

Peace.

108. Sigh! Only regret I have after reading this: I have to wait til Sunday to
see it. Our closest theater - AMC Century City in West L.A. - is sold out all day today, and tomorrow I can't wriggle free long enough. So my husband and I will go on Sunday evening.

This review is WUNNNNNNNNNNNderful. And frightening. And unnerving. And clarifying. I know I'm gonna cry, based on what I've heard (and the fact that I tend to get "contact cries" easily when I'm with other people who are crying). I already know most of what's in it, from the reviews and from my own research over the past three and a half years (THANK YOU, DU!!!) but still, I'm bracing myself.

You really take your reader straight into the theater with you. It is a MOST eloquent testimonial. It SHOULD be spread far and wide. A thing of beauty, it is. MOST appreciated. I'm thrilled that you sent it to Michael Moore. He needs to hear how much his movie is stirring people. We ALL need it.

Thanks SO much for this gorgeous, delicious piece of writing. Just lovely. It deserves every word of praise it's receiving here.

And WELCOME TO DU!!! Glad you surfaced. We need more people like you.

If I wasn't so broke I'd actually get around to contributing money to DU one of these days!

One can feel your emotion, that of the audience, and the movie all at once.

One of the best posts I have ever read.

113. What a wonderful post.
I felt so many of the same emotions as I sat laughing, crying, applauding and screaming with my fellow comrades in Oakland this afternoon.

All I can say now is just "WOW."

114. Same thing in my theater today
Noon showing. 3/4 to 7/8 filled. Widely diverse audience. Emotions like I have never seen in young and old together.Came out, hundreds on line to see it.

The one thing I took with me from the movie;

This battle we fight, it is us and the have not's against the have's and have more's. You'll understand that when you see the movie.

Why are we not in the Fucker Bush's face every day?
Soccer games?

131. I just want to say something here....
Through out the day, I've been scouring the web, looking at F-9/11 reviews, trying to be mindful of the predisposition that has already been created to destroy the veracity of this film.

It's heartbreaking - the denial and the dismissal of the facts, despite the clear demonstration of evidence.

Seemingly, the only thing a RW'er needs to invoke to debunk F-9/11 is the name of Michael Moore.

Once again, everything old is new again.

Apparently, attacking the messenger will remain far easier and less controversial than attacking the message. Character assassination doesn't need to bear the burden of accuracy.

So over the next few days, I'll be taking the messenger assassins to task. We'll see how their indictments of Moore's "agenda" hold up under the barrage of truth, of facts...

of public record.

Everyone, just know this;

Truth doesn't need to see both sides of the argument.

Truth just is.

132. Don't worry about hijacking the forum
One or two threads ain't going to do that. Now if you were spamming and creating countless threads with very little meaning to them, that would be a different story. But you clearly have something important to say so I don't see a problem with you making another thread.

There you go. You have my approval which really doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot on here.

Go for it.

135. Powerful review, cease_fire!
Welcome to DU!

I just got back from seeing the 7:40 p.m. showing in Broward County, FL. All I can say is, I was RIVETED. Oh, and * is screwed to the wall now. **BIG TIME.**

House was sold out, a mix of all ages, from seniors with wheelchairs and canes all the way down to late teens, no disruptions of any kind, no visible security/police around, a jocular crowd going in, but a stunned, stony silence coming out. "Beat Bush" buttons and John Kerry stickers on quite a few people. Gasps of outrage during the film as the grieving Michigan woman who lost her son stopped to speak with a petite, gnarled old woman sitting under a ramshackle canopy near the White House protesting the war, as another sneering woman walks by and stops to snidely comment that "this is staged!" and demanding to know where? when? as in 'I don't believe you lost a son!' Felt like putting that woman through the screen. F'ing ignorance.

The most wrenching moment for me: to again feel that searing pain in my gut of that bright blue morning when the screen was dark for 7 minutes and only the tremendous impact and explosion of the planes slamming into their targets and the forsaken screams of panic far below jarring the mind and body. That scene will undoubtedly flash back everyone to where they were and what they were doing at that dreadful moment.

This movie was a LIFE EXPERIENCE. Makes you feel every shade of emotion we humans are capable of... If we FEEL, we are human. And I took comfort tonight that there will be a tremendous number of people in America who will find it in their souls to face what we now have to face and to find our courage again.

We are in the middle of our history that will forever be shaped by what we decide to do at this moment in time about the malignancy in Our White House. That was the take-home message for me. Now, it's up to US.

Thank you, Michael Moore.

Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 01:51 AM by Jen6
both started out saying that they had always preferred to give * the benefit of the doubt, but after the film, one said "he's pure evil, he needs to be jettisoned onto some lifeless planet without a genesis program"! The other was just as disgusted and said that November couldn't come soon enough. One of them had been calling myself and one of my friends "crazy liberal conspirasists"...until she saw this movie and found out that everything I've been e-mailing her for the past few years is TRUE!

Sleep will not come easy for me (5 a.m.) after reading not only your emotions, but those of so many brothers & sisters here at DU. You have truly found your home here. The realization of F9/11's likely impact on "undecided" Americans has brought tears to these eyes and heart which I'd thought long ago dried up from cynicism. When we reclaim our country from the Octopus of Evil in November, patriots like you and countless other activist DUers will have our deepest, lasting gratitude.

I fear that along with a massive handkerchief to contain my pent-up sorrow and mourning, I should also wear a straightjacket for my Sunday F9/11 viewing; your preview forbodes a personal release of anger, angst, and loathing. But that is all part of the rebuilding and healing process which we'll all be sharing now - hopefully with millions more Americans who until now have not realized all that they've lost.

Game on, indeed!
