"Fahrenheit" gets widest release ever for a documentary: 868 theaters
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 08:10 PM by girl gone mad
Also, boxofficemojo.com has posted predictions for this weekend, and Fahrenheit is estimated to make 8.4 million.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think it will make just over 10 million. What do you guys think?

7. I'll see it whenever
My rule for these movies are listen to the whole thing but only believe about half of it. It looks really really interesting, I watched that scene where Moore tries and gets that Congressman to send his kids into the military. How ever I heard that they edited out the part where the congressman tells him that his Nephew is in the service. I hope its not true, it destroys the integrity of great films like this.

>>How ever I heard that they edited out the part where the congressman tells him that his Nephew is in the service. I hope its not true, it destroys the integrity of great films like this.<<

you heard that from rightwinger dreier on wolf blitzer reports today. and NO it doesn't "destroy the integrity" of the film. moore was asking these congressmen to sign up their children -- not their nephews and not those who are already IN the war.

it's called "talking points" and "bait 'n switch" -- learn their tactics and see through the dust, you might actually surprise yourself.

oh, and welcome to du.

27. I don't know Rose.........
More people than right-wingers feel that way about Moore's films.

Personally, I love Michael Moore and what he has to say, but I was disappointed when BFC won an Oscar, because in my view it was more or less an op-ed piece not a documentary.

There were other (more deserving) documentaries up for the Oscar that you've never heard of because of all the hype surrounding BFC.

32. I understand, but the Oscars are really BS awards anyway
How can you explain "Dances With Wolves" winning over "Goodfellas"? I think there were maybe better documentaries articstically, but BFC was timely. That's why it won.

35. I couldn't agree more..........
it sucks that that's the way it is.

I just feel bad for those filmmakers who sweat blood getting their films made only to be nonexistent in the public's mind because of Michael Moore.....this of course is not to say that I am upset with Moore, just that the way it works kinda blows.

Cheers. :hi:

1 N DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story Fox $30,070,196
2 N The Terminal DW $19,053,199
3 1 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban WB $18,027,466
4 3 Shrek 2 DW $13,941,950

I say it does more. $15M is not out of the question. The only thing stopping it is the limited number of screens. The per-screen average is going to be HUGE.

Two Brothers 1,800+
Fahrenheit 9/11 868

It will open wider each week, word of mouth will be huge, and it will hang around for many months.

"Columbine" hung around in theaters forever, it was amazing.

23. That's O.K., I'm wearing earplugs............
I guess it's because I don't normally enjoy watching a documentary in a theater....I find it too distracting when I'm trying to pay attention.

I saw BFC at home first on DVD and then in a theater, and I felt that I got more from it at home.

Additionally, I don't think I'm necessarily going to learn anything new from F9/11....I'm more or less part of 'the choir', I am just looking forward to seeing a great documentary.

20. UF punks form gangs disrupt movie!
I posted this other places but it fits here.

The site www.right-wingattackmachine.com, is setting up an anti-Michael Moore party in Gainesville near University of Florida. (where I go) The website says it will be, "hosting an impromptu gathering before going and seeing propagandist Michael Moore’s new movie “Fahrenheit 9/11.”

How is this happening on my campus?

33. I agree to some extent..
however, I think this film is more of a cultural phenomenom. Maybe not to the extent that "the Passion" was, but I do think a lot of people will want to be group spectators.

I'm lucky enough to live near an Angelika theater, and it's showing almost every hour over the weekend.

37. No doubt..........
but I think the 'cultural phenomenon' aspect is going to be more or less confined to the 'liberal' parts of the country.

We as a country are so polarized at this point that many, many people won't go to see it (at least in the theaters), just because it's a Michael Moore film....just as I'd rather have liver surgery than go to see a Sean Hannity Production.

I think it will break the $50 million barrier.

I know, call me crazy - but I really believe it will be that big. I also think Moore must get this out on DVD as soon as possible and forgoing big profits get it on national TV by late October. . .

47. Our local news (DC, channel 9) just did a spot on the premier...
in Washington today in which "800 VIPs were invited". Sally Fields and Art Buchwald were the only recognizable faces I saw. Some comments from the viewers: "A masterpiece"; "every American needs to see this movie"; "finally, the truth is coming out". Apparently, a lot of Congress was invited (didn't see any since they interviewed regular people) and Michael Moore was there! He said he had invited Bush but he didn't respond to his invitation and that he would be happy to show it at the White House and would even bring the popcorn!

Channel 4 also just did a spot with Arch Campbell, their movie critic. He said F911 had enraged Repubs and tickled Dems. He said Congress, their aides and policymakers were invited. The mother whose son was killed in Iraq was interviewed and said she was not only standing up for her son but for 850 other mothers. I saw Fritz Hollings, and Eleanor Holmes Norton. Arch said there wasn't a Republican within a mile of the Uptown theater. He also interviewed Michael and said what do you say to your critics? Mike said I don't have any critics. Arch said people are going through the roof and Mike said well, they should just come down off the roof and calm down, it is only a movie. He also said that there is no greater crime than lying us into a war. There was one freeper that I saw with a sign that said "our American Democrat fedayeen" with "rat" from Democrat underlined and in red.

I have seven tickets for family and friends for Friday night and can't wait!
