Deep Throat, could it have been George Bush Sr???
just curious. But he was director of the CIA back then right?

recently some professor had his class do a project on who deep throat is and they came up with Frank Fielding, who serves on the National Commission of Terrorist Attacks.

5. If he was that inside you could be right.
Pat actually has a kind of moral code he adheres to, flawed as it is.

Supposedly his identity can be revealed after his death.

9. YES!!!.......I feel that he was, because Nixon was set up to resign!
He wanted to can Nixon because he knew Nixon couldn't stand him!

Bush at that time wanted certain positions that Nixon refused to
give. Nixon gave Bush to Kissinger to appease the whining silverspoon!

And we all know if you cross Bush his vengence overwhelms him to
no end! So he and his wealthy pet pals set Nixon up!

14. Nixon, although he liked Vietnam war, didn't like the military
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 02:51 AM by AP
industrial complex all that much (his detente with China conflicted with the desire of some on the right to have escalated tensions warranting build-up of weapons). Furthermore, he was fighting for a higher minimum wage (which big business, in general, didn't like), and agreed that the environment should be protected (much to the chagrin of some Texas oil men).

Nixon's version of conservativism was definitely at odds with the Bush wing of the Republican party's vision. I believe Nixon was so paranoid because he had enemies to the left AND to the right, and that GHWB was his biggest enemy to the right, and that Nixon would never have been successfully attacked and have had to resig if he was only getting it from the left -- face it, the left isn't that well-organized and never could bave pulled it off. What happened to Nixon could only have been done with the cunning of the fascist right wing of the Republican Party (they probably saw their opportunity after the break-in, and then went for the jugular). Deep Throat, in my opinion, was definitely a Republican trying to sabotage Nixon for the benefit of a different, more fascistic, pro-corporate, pro-oil, pro-military element in the Republican party; to wit, the Bush family.

27. Believe it or not
Many of Nixon's policies were more liberal than Clinton's
profit sharing
raising minimum wage
military downsizing
detente
opening with China
increased welfare aid and social spending

His problem was not his politics but his complete lack of morals, as seen in Vietnam, Cambodia, Chile and at home with a plethora of constitutional abuses from wiretaps to break ins.

28. His problem was also that he was hated by the left and the farther right
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 11:27 AM by AP
If you were getting it from both sides the only way you could possibly stay in office would be to check your morals at the door and do things like bug the DNC headquarters.

Nixon was trying to modernize the Republican party. He was ready to accept the fact that the middle class was going to get bigger, wealthier, and more powerful politically, and he was going to be the transitional president who brought the Republican party towards being electable while confronting that new reality. Bush didn't like that kind of Republican Party. They wanted corporations to have supremacy and for the party to respond only to the needs of the super wealthy. Bush won that battle, and that's part of the reason we're at the point we're at today. This is why you find the occasional Republican who hates Bush -- they thought the Republican party was going in that other direction.

18. If it was done for honor, we'd probably know DT's ID
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 02:52 AM by AP
Because we don't, I'm going to guess Nixon's ouster was done for internal Republican Party political reasons, and we don't know DT's ID because someone is still trying to hide the significance of the political manouverings (probably because they have ramifications today -- ie, because Watergate led to a change in control of the Republican Party with the line of succession being drawn straight to today's White House resident).

22. I agree, Zuni
The more I think about those times, the more Kissinger keeps rising to the forefront. Even the "Deep Throat" cover name seems to refer to the deep throaty voice Kissinger has (rather than the porn film connotation it had back then).

He is a naturalized citizen in a powerful position so would have had to really cover his "A;" he was building his resume as a man of integrity and would want someone to testify that he was not a criminal. He was in the thick of things. If anyone would know what was going on - he would.

The cloak and dagger meetings seem to fit his secretive, furtive manner.

And Kissinger never is far from the action - even now. His diary must be a hoot and the stuff of CIA/Ashcroft wet dreams!

13. I think it was either GHWB, or someone directed by GHWB
Some evidence: Bob Woodward's fawning over the Bush family, and the fact that the University of Texas bought the Woodward and Bernstein papers and promised not to reveal Deep Throat's identity.

16. John Dean was going to announce Deep Throat's identity a couple...
...months ago and didn't. That says to me that Deep Throat is someone who's still relevant in politics today, and it's someone Dean knew back then (ie, a powerful Republican). Because Dean didn't anounce the name, I'll assume it was because someone pressured him. I think it was Bush.

20. bob woodward's view of bush
interesting theory on why it could be george h w bush. i never heard of it before, but it does seem believable. do you think bob woodwards view of the first bush, and the current or just the bush family in general would back up your theory ? i assume woodward has a positive view of dt, and if it is the first bush then maybe there is something in his writing that shows he seems to like or favor bush and other bush family unlike others he has written about.

21. Woodward is consistently pumping GWB, and he wrote that book
about Clinton's first half term which created the image that the Clinton white house was disorganized and immature (which was a central theme of the successful 94 mid-term campaigns against Clinton -- specifically, although the Republicans created the budget mess, they ran successfully on the notion that they, of the conservative men' suit, and the conservative men's haircut, were going to solve all the problems the disorganized, pizza-ordering, late for meetings, up all night Clinton white house had creaated out of their slopiness (which, incidentally, was a total lie). I.e., Woodward played an integral role in the formation of the anti-Clinton campaign themes of 94. Coincidence? Chicken or Egg? Was it a carefuly coordinated strategy?

23. Follow the Money (and the Power)
It worked out pretty well for Poppy in the 30 years (wow am I feeling old) since Nixon and his relatively moderate machine blew up like a poison dog.

Between Poppy Wimp and The Boy Wimper, these Bush criminals have either been President or Vice-Pesident for 15 of the last 23 years. Doesn't get better than that for uber-greedy, power-mad Repukes.

I don't think they're smart enough to orchestrate the whole thing, there are just way too many variables, but they sure have been in the right place at the right time.
