And for some good news, as I take the pulse of a Pentacostal
I am taking a class here in Michigan, (health care position) so I can find a JOB....the people in the class are a mixed bag of folks, some have college degrees , some do not, some are welfare to work mothers, most are just getting by and many are the ONCE relaxed middle class who are barely struggling now to pay their bills and survive.
One of the women in my class is a Pentacostal..I always treat everyone with respect and dignity, (the Golden Rule), and she told me the other day
"Your stepson is in Iraq?"
"yes" I said
"That Bush...my church USED to like him, but hes no good..he lied..I saw on TV that Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11....!!"
"Yes, I knew that a long time ago" I told her.
"How did you know that?" she said.
I gave her some websites to peruse and asked her who she was voting for.
"I dont vote" she said "I aint very good at it"
I intend to get this woman a voters registration card, and fast.
I spoke with her about Jesus, and mentioned the beatitudes, where Jesus says "Blessed are the peacemakers". I also mentioned other references in the Bible that Bush is NOT following (thank goodness I remember my bible studies)
She stated that her WHOLE CHURCH did NOT like Bush...that he lied, that his administration might have been popular before with them, but
IT ISNT NOW

She likes me, and wants to hear more from me about what a prick Bush is.
Therefore, I will speak her language and keep working on her and the other people in my class, who, by the way, have ALL told me they are NOT voting for Bush. None of them can find a job (in my town the unemployment rate is 10%)
IF BUSH IS HATED NOW BY THE PENTACOSTALS, THAT MEANS HE IS LOSING HIS CORE CONSTITUENCY.

Another thing...I mentioned the Golden Rule to her, and I also mentioned what a Pharisee was...I told her that Pharisees are exactly what Bush IS and all his friends..people who walk around pounding their chests and acting like they are Christians and Holier then Thou...and I told her if Jesus comes back he will slap Bush and his gang into Hell.
She agreed, which I found quite delightful.
She asked me what church I belonged to, and I told her..the Kingdom of God is within...and told her Jesus said that.
Just a heads up folks..the Pentacostals turning against Bush...bad news for that moronic little twit in our White House.

2. Ever consider converting?
I mean converting Pentecostals into Democrats, not converting yourself into a Pentecostal.

But on a serious note, you did GREAT!! This is how elections are won. One person at a time.

3. That's wonderful
Nothing would please me more than to hear that Christian Americans are actually waking up and seeing Bush for the anti-Christian (for lack of a better word...demon??) that he is. I don't care how fundamentalist you might be, all you have to do is 'know him by his deeds'.

6. yes, I told her that too
"You will know them from the fruits they bear"..she 'sort of' remembered that from the Bible ( I dont think she has ever read it)..but nonetheless, she got the gist of what I was saying...that the "fruits" borne from this administration are NOT good, and she also liked when I told her Jesus said "whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me"..
and the way the poor and disenfranchised are being treated now, and the elderly and children by the Bush admin is NOT what Christ would have wanted...she agreed.
The Pentacostals turning against Bush? HOOah!

4. Right on, I have been working hard on a few southern baptists
earlier there was a great thread about Jesus and the rich. My favorite was Matthew 19:21-23. "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a need than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

James 5:1-6, and Micah6:12 are also pretty good.

Keep up the good work!

17. The Southern Baptists are going to be a tough sell.
They live by the slogans they've been fed by some real bad preachers.
(for the most part)

8. Evangelicals aren't monolithic
Although they are more likely to be social conservatives, sometimes that social conservatism gets overridden by a concern for following the teachings of Christ, not Paul.

I always give them the benefit of the doubt. If they let me know they're assholes, I just move on.

9. After a local Pentecostal soldier was killed in Iraq....
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 05:07 PM by Padraig18
... the Pentecostals have turned against Bush. It made the war real for them, and the soldier's mother is now publicly speaking out against the war, and several of her fellow church members show up to support her when she does.

Remember the parable about the man who built his house upon the sand, folks...

11. This fraudulent war is coming home to roost in the small towns
that, and the economy is what will bring down Bush. 10 % unemployment, their kids coming home wounded or dead...
folks, it's Vietnam......on Speed.

10. Wow, great work Mari!
I think it's very important to spread the word about what a religious hypocrite Bush is. I know there is a Bible verse about knowing people by the fruits of their spirit. (It's been a long time since I attended Sunday school, so I can't quote it.) Any person who truly loves God knows that Bush's fruits are rotten.

Converting the spiritual away from Bush is getting easier. I finally convinced my father, who has voted Republican ever since Goldwater in '64 to not vote for Bush this year. I'm still working on getting him to vote for Kerry, but as far as Bush is concerned, Abu Ghraib was the last straw for him. My father is Greek Orthodox, very spiritual, and can't abide the machinations of the Bush misadministration any more.

God bless, and good luck Mari!

12. CARRY REGISTRATION FORMS WITH YOU!
Not shouting at you, Mari, just trying to get some attention. :)

Kudos to you for talking openly with people you're around. It helps!

And for *everyone reading this thread* -- go get some registration forms (they have them in libraries here), and carry them with you. That way if you happen to meet someone who needs to register, you can help them then and there.

Beware yee of Wolves in Sheep's clothing....

Glad too read some good news from you, Mari, it hasn't been easy, eh?
A friend of mine's son just returned from 15 months in Baghdad. Safe and sound. Well, we hope he is sound. Time will tell.

16. I'm non-religious. But, I've never met an insincere Pentecostal.
Further, I've found them to be most reasonable about life values. Unlike most of the right-wing fundies, they gravitate toward the words of Jesus that they've read themselves in the New Testament.

I'm not surprised by the preceding encounter. I believe that you are correct in deducting that there may be many Pentecostals as well as other honest, loving people out there who are catching on the Bush's crooked ways.
