I found it weird that bush* referred to Mr. Johnson as "Paul"
When bush* called him Paul like he was an old friend, I thought it was extremely disingenuous.

"The murder of Paul shows the true nature of the enemy we face," the president said, adding that there was no justification for the killing.

7. Why would I be kidding?
Isn't it being kind of familiar to call someone you don't know by their first name, especially when you're talking about something as personal as their death? In French there's a verb: "tutoyer," meaning, literally, to call someone "tu" or to be overly familiar. It felt (to me, anyway) like George was tutoyer-ing Mr. Johnson.

10. I felt a bit of that in hearing him say it. Out of respect it should have
been Mr. Johnson or Paul Johnson.

last name. He did good remembering Paul, he stumbled around so.
Have you seen the thread that has enlarged photos of his press notes with the list of his subjects and the reporters to call on? Let me see if I can find the link for you.

21. "out of respect" are words that haven't made it into the bush lexicon.
But there was still the part of me that expected * to be at least a little bit respectful. At least for the sound bite, if not for longer than that.

I have very low expectations for *, and obviously, I didn't expect great oratory remarks to come from his mouth... However, his remarks were worse than even I could have imagined... The first thought that came to mind was:

"It's not like it was a hard name to remember. Even if he didn't want to remember the name of the deceased, he could have pulled a move out of a high school final exam. (You know- the great cheat sheets made possible by long sleeves and a fine tip pens) "

And then I felt angry. Angry that I was angry at the person that was supposed to be quelling my anger. But I'm calm now, seeing that I'm not the only one that noticed that Mr. Johnson was referred to as "Paul." (Thank you, DU.)

8. He first names EVERYONE
He calls Kofi Annon "Kofi", and I heard him refer to Jacques Chirac as "Jacques" (only he pronounced it strangely, kind of a combination between Jack and Jock.) I wonder what he calls Queen Elizabeth?

12. At least he didn't give Mr. Johnson a nickname
like "Shorty" or "Crew-cut". You know how much * loves giving people nicknames -- especially derogatory ones.

*'s insensitivity knows no bounds.

15. THANK YOU!!!!! That Struck Me As Terribly RUDE And Presumptious Of Him
If I were a family member, I'd be write a press release or issue a public statement letting the world know that the Johnson family would appreciate it if George didn't refer to Paul Johnson in the familiar. Or better yet... NOT AT ALL. Mr. Johnson is NOT a tool to be used to prop up the George* poll numbers.

22. You know, that doesn't bother me....
So many of us have been following this story all week, and it just makes him seem closer to us all.

Of course, I didn't hear Bush say it. I just read it. So I couldn't comment on the tone. In my mind, however, Mr. Johnson would have seemed to formal, and Paul Johnson would have seemed to impersonal.
