Oil Chief: My Fears for Planet: Shell Boss's 'Confession' Shocks Industry
The head of one of the world's biggest oil companies has admitted that the threat of climate change makes him "really very worried for the planet".

In an interview in today's Guardian Life section, Ron Oxburgh, chairman of Shell, says we urgently need to capture emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which scientists think contribute to global warming, and store them underground - a technique called carbon sequestration.

"Sequestration is difficult, but if we don't have sequestration then I see very little hope for the world," said Lord Oxburgh. "No one can be comfortable at the prospect of continuing to pump out the amounts of carbon dioxide that we are pumping out at present ... with consequences that we really can't predict but are probably not good."

His comments will enrage many in the oil industry, which is targeted by climate change campaigners because the use of its products spews out huge quantities of carbon dioxide, most visibly from vehicle exhausts.

3. Its more likely that Shell has a solution in mind
and will capitalize on the government funding of systems to do this, or at least has a list of proposals in mind to capture R&D funding provided by the government.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, because we must do something. But any company that gets public money to further its intellectual property or product/service capability should grant stock back to the public. I am sick of companies socializing the losses and privitizing the profits while they move their headquarters to Bermuda to further avoid taxation.

4. BINGO! kcwayne wins today's Big Oil 'see thru the bullshit' contest
If the company I work for wins the bid for the environmental management, we design/build the CO2 injection system.

The Gorgon Development is being pursued by an unincorporated joint venture consisting of three international energy companies: ChevronTexaco, Shell and ExxonMobil (the Gorgon Venture).

The Gorgon Development is based on:

Installation of a sub-sea gathering system
70 kilometre sub-sea pipeline to Barrow Island
A gas processing facility located on central-east coast of Barrow Island
CO2 removal and reinjection process
Liquid hydrocarbon shipping facilities to transport the product to international markets
Delivery of compressed domestic gas to the Western Australian mainland via subsea pipeline for use by industrial and domestic gas markets

5. Shell is Not a Texas-Based RW Firm
They're from the Netherlands, and Oxburgh is a British Lord. Slightly different perspective.
