Most of the "senior diplomats" calling for Bush defeat are former .....
Reagan and BushSr officials. This should shake the Republican Party right down to their socks. Some of the most respected officials that worked for Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr, think Bush Jr is a disaster. He must be defeated.

<snip>
Today a group of former senior diplomatic officials and retired military commanders--several of whom are the kind who "have never spoken out before" on such matters--issued a bracing statement arguing that George W. Bush has damaged the country's national security and calling on Americans to defeat him in November. It's too early to tell if the statement will have an impact on this fall's campaign. But Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change, as the group is called, reveals (again) how dangerously isolated the Bush Administration is not just around the world but even from America's own bipartisan foreign policy and military establishments.

<snip>
Jack Matlock, who served as Reagan and Bush 41's ambassador to the Soviet Union, has signed the statement, as has Ret. Adm. William Crowe, who served as Reagan's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Retired Marine Gen. Joseph Hoar has added his name to the list, and he commanded US forces in the Middle East under Bush Sr. Phyllis Oakley, who served as a State Department spokesperson under Reagan, is another signatory. The vast majority of the signatories are, in fact, either conservative Republicans who served under Reagan and Bush 41 or they are bipartisan, consensus-driven ex-diplomats who served their country from Africa to Asia because they believed in America's leadership role around the world.

<snip>
George Harrop, a former ambassador to Kenya and Israel, spoke for many in the diplomatic corps, and I suspect for even some former Bush I officials like Brent Scowcroft, when he said: "I really am essentially a Republican. I voted for George Bush's father, and I voted for George Bush. But what we got was not the George Bush we voted for." And former Ambassador Joseph Wilson has reminded Americans of just how many lies the Administration was willing to make in its quest to convince people that Iraq posed a nuclear threat to the United States.

2. Been hearing a lot about this on NPR.....
And it does sound damaging to the president's credibility. But you know....most Americans simply don't give a shit. You can run down the chimp all you want, but as soon as you say the word "TAX" and the name "JOHN KERRY" in the same sentence in a campaign ad (no matter if said accusation is grounded in reality or not)....wooosh.....the monkey's back in the oval office, flinging filth for another four years.

Unfortunately, I've come to the realization that most Americans are single-issue dullards who only care about their taxes. As long as Hitler didn't raise taxes, I'm sure this generation of Americans would think he was a groovy guy.

5. Mike Watt's Hoot Page.
I remember reading an interview with D. Boon from before the 84 election where he said something to the effect of "the democrats don't have their shit together, but they're the only people who can keep republicans out of the white house, so you better do all you can to kick the democrat's asses into gear."

And this was in 1984. Will we heed his warning?

8. I'm not sure that the "man on the street" opinion is most important here.
The "elites," the "powers-that-be" are the key thing here. If the policymakers and moguls of American international power come to a consensus view that Bush is a dangerous radical, then we can rest relatively assured that there will be a systematic campaign to politically destroy Bush, aside from the Kerry campaign. It happened to Carter and Bush I as well.

4. "What we have got is not the George Bush...
...we voted for." (???????)

Like hell it isn't!!! What did they think they were going to get when they voted for this fucking ninny?!?! I'm not even sure what that statement could possibly mean. Anyone who saw this jerk before he was installed in the White House (on Letterman, on the debates) should have known EXACTLY what we'd be getting. I don't understand it.
