Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 03:32 PM by wndycty
. . .this whole McCain turned down Kerry thing was a ramp up to build anticipation for the announcement. We all knew that McCain was not going to accept and if you notice it was "Democratic insiders" who are saying that McCain turned down Kerry. I think what we have here is a clever way to ramp up the anticipation, I am thinking with the Ronnie love fest over we are about to get an announcement by the Kerry camp.

24. I agree, Clark would be great.
I was originally hoping he would be the one running for president. He would of been till the media once again, ran the compain against him, like they usually do to anyone they don't want on the forefront.

I hope Kerry chooses quickly because I'm afraid any delays will only hurt him in the long run. Any delays the other side just trys to turn into "oh Kerry is flip floping" or some other BS.

3. If he does
he ought to do it at least several days before Clinton's book comes out. It's possible he also might wait until July.

27. I say wait until after Clinton's book
It will be out in the next couple weeks. We are already starting to see the buildup. Naming a VP now may not be effective.

Let Clinton have a little of the spotlight for a week or two. By this time, Ronniemania will have run it's course. Clinton's legacy will bring back fond memories, and this will only help Kerry. Kerry compares much better to CLinton than Bush does to Reagan.

After America's attention span runs out, then hit 'em with the VP. THis will build excitement for the convention.

5. Nahhh, after the McCain flap, they'll wait
It will make it look like the McCain overture wasn't serious.

However, who is this Democratic insider? He/she should be a Democratic outsider, the SOB.

7. Thats just it, THERE WAS NOT McCAIN FLAP
This was tossed out to draw attention to the whole Kerry VP thing as the Ronnie lovefest was winding down. They wanted to accomplish two things 1) draw attention back to Kerry and 2) kill all further discussion of McCain as VP. If you ask me this was no flap it was planned.

10. Ocham's razor
What's more likey, a masterful chess move on the part of the Kerry campaign during Reagan Week or some sick SOB Democratic insider who can't keep his/her mouth shut?

What political advantage do they get from a smackdown from McCain?

12. Its not a smackdown. . .
. . .McCain was not going to take the position and I am sure both he and Kerry wanted to take the possibility of him being VP off the table. No smackdown by McCain here..

26. Not putting on my foil hat, but...
I don't think McCain would be a good choice weather they were serious about it or not. It would look like McCain was being a trader to "his" party, and people would wonder if the Democrats could trust him as well. I would wonder where he really stood on the issues, and probably a lot of others would as well.

23. LOL - Edwards - "spunky fun vibe"!
Also, charisma, smarts, looks, likeability, great wife and kids, great personal story, real understanding and compassion for regular people.

And that spunky fun vibe!

I simply see nothing to be gained and everything to lose by jumping the gun. VP's are almost always announced shortly before or at the convention; offhand, I can't think of an exception in the last 50 years. The whole buildup dominates the news for days. It focuses attention on the nominee at a critical time (the convention and its immediate aftermath). Its a perfect lead-in to the convention.

If Kerry announces now, it'll be old news well before the 4th of July. Only die hard political junkies are paying attention now, in mid-June, and the whole story would be totally wasted.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll be very surprised if the VP is announced before mid-July.

15. OK meet me halfway. . .
. . .do you at least think it was released (by Democrats) to get the whole notion of McCain as VP off the radar, I am sure if they did not say something it would become a huge distraction. I still think they are going to make an announcement soon, but at least meet me halfway (LOL).

16. Certainly, I agree, it was "released" to finish off the McCain idea
And I think it was very well done. Kerry never planned to nominate McCain; McCain never planned to accept. They just both hate Bush and wanted to twist the knife a little bit. Notice, Kerry says he never offered, and McCain says he was never offered. It was merely discussed. Only media-whores like Peter Jennings omit that relevant part of the story.

That said, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see McCain as Sec Defense in the Kerry administration.

18. Remember though, I'm one of those idiots who thought Clark
was smart to pass up Iowa. That, quite likely, was the kiss-of-death for his campaign, especially seeing how poorly Gephart and Dean did. Had Clark competed, especially with AFSME's support (which was likely at one point) he would likely have done well enough there to propel his campaign to a good showing in New Hampshire (he was #2 there BEFORE Iowa).

Hindsight, as they say.....

21. I wouldn't be surprised, but immediately after it happens...
watch the Bush camp change the subject back to them. My guess: they'll announce that Cheney's out (perhaps to head CIA), someone (Giuliani??) in.

They're waiting to announce this until Kerry announces his. I betcha.

22. Is Kerry still running?
Gee - I forgot all about him . . . Haven't seen hide nor hair of him since he won the nomination!

First it was the Clarke book, then the Woddward book, then the 9/11 investigation, then the torture scandal and investigation, then the Reagan death and now what will keep him out of the news? Ray Charles?

Well, I guess no news is good news for Senator Kerry!

28. CNN reported the announcement would come soon on Friday June 4
They announced that the announcement would be made within the next few days on Friday June 4. It was confirmed with the Kerry camp. Then Reagan died the next day and all the air was sucked out of news cycle for the next week.

I think it will be Edwards, and I think it will be announced sooner rather than later.
