BBV: CA SOS recertifies TS-voting machines in two counties
Secretary of State recertifies O.C. touch-screen voting machines

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Secretary of State Kevin Shelley restored electronic voting privileges for Orange County on Thursday, two days after doing the same for Merced County.
The action means thousands of electronic voting machines decertified earlier this year in the two counties will be available to voters in November. Shelley took the earlier action after electronic machines in several counties malfunctioned during the March primary.

Orange County officials agreed to numerous new security precautions for the November election, including making paper ballots available to voters who request them. The county must also make its computer source code available for independent analysis and strengthen poll worker training.

Orange County uses an electronic voting system manufactured by Texas-based Hart InterCivic.

Shelley Spokeswoman Carol Dahmen said more counties are expected to win approval for their machines in coming days. Shelley originally banned electronic voting in 14 counties, allowing 10 the option of winning back approval with new security precautions.

any thoughts? didn't see this posted yet anywhere... why is Shelley not insisting on printers being attached to create paper ballots to be verified by the voter? will poll workers have to stay late to count the huge demand for paper ballots?

1. If the machines don't print paper ballots
the polling places better have a lot of paper ballots on hand!

6. A few people voting via paper ballot doesn't matter, because the machines

still introduce a method of creating false votes since *they* do not reqire a paper trail for folks to come back and look at.

Imho, they *must* be planning on stealing elections, since they have been trying desperately not to add the printing of paper ballots to their machines. :mad:

They have been funneling GOBS of money into PR trying to think up ways to keep these hardcopyless machines in play. EVERY machine that does not produce a hardcopy is a security risk.

3. more precautions mentioned in this article...
Among the 23 security measures ES&S and Merced County had to meet in order for the system to be recertified include:

Voters must have the ability to cast a paper ballot;

The computer software, firmware, or hardware must be made available to the Secretary of State's office;

No telephone, wireless or Internet connections are permitted on the machines; and

The county is required to provide the Secretary of State with a comprehensive poll worker training program.

4. Didn't think the thread would drop so fast
maybe Californians are OK with Touch Screens without printers...although I know some are working extra hard to avoid them.

5. I think more would care if we knew
It really comes down to educating the public about the dangers of these electronic voting systems. Until I began to actively poke around on the 'Net and read about Kevin Shelley's actions in the LA Times, I wasn't aware these issues.

By the way, this is my first post here. Bev– love your work. I am constantly checking your site for the latest updates.

Cheers,
Sagar
