23. Don't you know ...

Unions are communist. Therefore, bargaining for your collective well being is slavery. Get it.

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY!!!!!!

Ronald Reagan, may he rest and give US peace!!!!!

7. My wife grew up in Kamensk Uralsky...
And feels the same way, personally insulted by the extent to which the conservatives propagandize the people of the Soviet Union for their own political purposes.

All these people need to read Discovering America As It Is for to learn about the ways in which the conservatives manipulated soviet dissidents for their own political gain...

12. Fascinating, isn't it?
From January 1977 to January 1981, the USSR was an implacable, unstoppable force, beyond anyone's control and rolling forward on all fronts as it crushed freedom everywhere.

But from January 1981 to January 1989, its leaders and citizens alike were but inert, helpless clay, putty in the hands of the Mighty Reagan as he singlehandedly scaled the Kremlin walls (in a scene not unlike outtakes from The Scorpion King) and took out Mikhail Gorbachev mano a mano.

Yeah, right.

I don't know what's worse - American politicians' willingness to use total ahistorical bullshit in their blatherings, or the ignorance of Americans as a whole that lets them get away with it.

15. Speaking for my wife...
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 11:13 AM by WillW
She (and her friends still in Russia) are very disappointed with what has become of their country. She personally believes that the Union should have stayed together and the country should have thrown out the corrupt party leaders and adopted a model much more like the Scandinavian social democracies. She hates what thug-capitalism has done to her country.

18. I couldn't agree more with your wife!
It pains me when I visit, to see my homeland like this. It's still the largest country in the world, with huge natural resources, and it borderlines a third world nation.

24. Meet the new boss....
... same as the old boss!!!!

The same people run Russia as ran the Soviet Union. There is now just a pretense of Democracry and "privatization". Basically, the party leaders stole all the state wealth.

Same shit, different propaganda!!!!!

Do you think Reagan ended Soviet communism, or did it collapse on its own as we suspect?
And welcome, my friend! :hi:

11. I think one man can't take the credit for something so huge
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 11:01 AM by russian33
All Reagan did is force the government to spend large sums of money to keep up with him. I believe it was a string of events that led to eventual collapse of USSR. Once you opened the flood-gates, and republics wanted to get out left and right, there was no way of stopping it.

And actually, it wasn't all that bad. I remember the 80's, before Gorbachev. We had free education (to this day I believe one of the best in the world), free health care, steady jobs, almost free housing (minimal fee), great cultural life. Yes, of course there were negatives, but which country doesn't have them? USSR was never a Communist state, we were always on the 'road to Communism'.

You might ask why did we leave? Well, once 'capitalism and democracy' (and I use those terms loosly, as Russian versions of those are far cry from the real thing), came in, and the government let everyone run free, the country fell into a hole, and has been there for a while.

We had to start from nothing, and what better place to do that, than here!

And thanks for the welcome!

19. Perfect quote from my boss re: RR & Communism
He was standing at the busstop when the bus came by and took credit for driving it.

The Soviet State collapsed because, among MANY other reasons, they were throwing money and human resources down a hole waging a pointless war in Afghanistan and were too stubborn to get out. That same war in which we trained, funded and armed a "freedom fighter" named Osama bin Laden.

I think the writing is on the wall for this country too. I do believe that the PNAC agenda will bring this country down (it is already in the process of doing so.)

There is no evidence to suggest that the Soviet Union tried to match us in the arms buildup, so while we spent billion/trillions of dollars on defence, they pretty much sat on the missiles they had.

26. Geez ... reminds me of ...

The United States throwing money down a giant money whole in Southeast Asia. And the subsequent malaise in the 70s that followed.

BTW, the gas lines started under NIXON!!!! Carter didn't CAUSE them. In fact, he ENDED them with higher energy efficiency.
