Seymour Hersh: "You haven't begun to see evil..."
http://www.j-bradford-delong.net/movable_type/2004_archives/000987.html

Sorry for the long link & even more sorry if this is a dupe.

The last graph:

"He said that after he broke Abu Ghraib people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, "You haven't begun to see evil..." then trailed off. He said, "horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run."

19. Further:
He talked about how hard it is to get the truth out in Republican Washington: "If you agree with the neocons you're a genius. If you disagree you're a traitor." Bush, he said, was closing ranks, purging anyone who wasn't 100% with him. Said Tenet has a child in bad health, has heart problems, and seemed to find him generally a decent guy under unimaginable pressure, and that people told him that Tenet feared a heart attack if he had to take one more grilling from Cheney. "When these guys memoirs come out, it will shock all of us."...

This is a thread that ought to be kicked like a football.

It's exactly the same expression and the same angle - but he's AGED so much in that time. You know the one? He's sneering and looking up and there are big white stars on the backdrop.

67. Whaaaat? Of Course They Will Minimize.
These are the children of terrists after all. If the life of one US soldat can claim to be saved at the pain of the terrist children and the anguish of their parents then it's all worth it. I think you forgot that 3000 AMERICANS died on 9/11 and these terrist children and their parents were largely responsible. W* and the Vulcans said so. And besides, even if it is wrong it was only one person who masterminded and carried out the is whole operation... that damn Liddy England(I dont give a damn about the spelling).</sarcasm>

and if you can stand it.....think of the conditions and all the deaths on the slave ships

23. None of 'em can do it alone.
You are so right, LittleApple! We all know that everytime Kennedy, or Byrd applies pressure, they get tons of crappy, negative responses, and probably not a few death threats. We need to take time every day to express our appreciation in a phone call to those who ARE trying to take back our country, and let the rest of 'em know we watching, and will work against them if they continue to support this madness.

That number works well, and it makes a difference.

I think the rethugs would sleep through a full-blown massacre in this very country. They will never see it because they don't want to.

The media would look the other way, and any hints that anything was going on would be attributed to conspiracy theorists or "the librul media"

A Testimonial from a fellow DUer here:

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO DO SOMETHING...make a phone call or send a paper letter. E-mails are quick and cheap and don't carry the weight of a phone call or a PAPER LETTER. Paul Begala says a hundred paper letters would change the direction of a news program. – DUer grasswire, 5/20/04

That's what I do. I start out informing them that I am providing written notification concerning certain information. Then, I outline and reference the information. I close by telling them I am maintaining a record of the notice in the event they fail to take aggressive corrective and/or legal actions immediately.

116. Point out to them that as a taxpayer and voter, YOU ARE THEIR EMPLOYER.
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 03:18 PM by calimary
Then you say: "As his/her employer, this is my directive:" And frankly, whoever would presume to want to hang up on you IS ALSO YOUR EMPLOYEE. Remind them of that, also.

Furthermore, that 800 number - 1 (800) 839 - 5276 - is TOLL FREE to Capitol Hill, AND there's no limit on how many times you can use it. SOoooooooo....... You can call as many of your reps, and as many of OTHER PEOPLE'S reps as you like.

You MIGHT ALSO try a little subversive technique I found to be MOST effective with some of these knuckle-draggers. Call up, and get your mind around the idea that you are a MODERATE REPUBLICAN. And as such, you are concerned about the misguided direction in which some of your favorite (DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO STIFLE THE GAGGING REFLEX) reps are going. Express your concern. I've found it helpful, in this guise, to say "... may I just voice my concern, even while I am a loyal supporter, that..." OR "... I'd just like to add my voice to the others who are becoming worried about..." USE YOUR SWEETEST, MOST NONCONFRONTATIONAL tone of voice. Make like you're a seriously wavering member of the faithful, and you're really concerned about all this, now. Try to put yourself into that mindset. I know it won't be easy, but just try. They'll be more receptive to you, and at least note your feelings, because if they detect that you're one of the faithful WHOM THEY'RE IN DANGER OF LOSING, they'll listen up, and listen up fast. I've gotten some rather satisfying responses when doing this. I tried it when calling Orrin Hatch's office one time, and he usually has some real blue-ribbon snotnoses working for him. They treated me politely and with respect, and they behaved as gentlemen. They certainly did not hang up on me.

ALSO: call Chuck Hagel's office. And Lincoln Chafee's office. And John McCain's office. And Richard Lugar's office. And Olympia Snowe's office. There are a few, a precious few, who are relatively reasonable.

THE POINT IS PLAIN: JUST GET THE MESSAGE OUT. PLANT THE SEEDS. Some of those seeds will fall on barren ground. BUT NOT ALL OF THEM WILL!

And by all means, call some Dems, too. They'll be more amenable in any event.

114. IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. DO. IT. ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to scream atcha. I mean no harm, really!

But YOU need to know this, above all.

I don't care if they're republi-CONS. THEY STILL NEED TO KNOW. THEY STILL NEED TO HEAR THIS. THEY STILL NEED TO BE REMINDED THAT NOT EVERYBODY THEY CLAIM TO REPRESENT SHARES THEIR VIEWS.

Sometimes, republi-CONS are actually good for something. It was the Republicans who finally went to Nixon and told him the game was up.

Furthermore, this is not the last word. There is a LONG summer ahead, where Kerry will continue to gain ground and their beloved little bushie will continue to lose it. We still have the Plame Game ahead, plus the 9-11 Commission post mortems. PLUS Torture-gate, and the memos that keep finding their way out of secrecy (probably from more pissed-off CIA people) onto the internet and then into a more open public eye. There are more problems to come, more poll numbers that will be down. And as even THESE people start seeing the handwriting on the wall, they will be more amenable to hearing your message. Think rats. Think sinking ship. ALL OF CONGRESS is also up for reelection. It's not just bush. And even YOUR people serve at your pleasure.

123. Dialing For Democracy, calimary!
I wanna thank you for pushing this..... you now have me obsessed. ~~gigglesnort~~

I've been encouraging all around me to WRITE, CALL, and it's starting to have an effect. Once people experience how easy it is to make those calls to the 800 number, they start to get hooked. :)

This is what we're going to HAVE TO DO, if we're going to get our country back. It's the very least we can do, and it doesn't hurt, doesn't cost money, and doesn't even take a whole host of time.

DIALING FOR DEMOCRACY!

they don't plan to have one.. and filming was not allowed. This is a description of his lecture:

I also found this RW piece of crap trying to discredit him: (I don't want to even quote anything from here because it is despicable...But it always amazes me what smears and lies they dare to portray as the truth.)

Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 02:35 AM by oblivious
Amal Kadham Swadi, an Iraqi attorney representing women detainees, told The Guardian she believes that sexualized violence and abuse committed by U.S. soldiers against female prisoners goes far beyond a few isolated cases. It's "happening all across Iraq," she said.

Another Pentagon report indicates that three soldiers from military intelligence were alleged to have sexually assaulted a female detainee at Abu Ghraib last October. Army investigators did not confirm the assault. The three soldiers were reportedly fined several hundred dollars each...

Why have US television stations refused to broadcast this documentary?

In Afghanistan, filmmaker Jamie Doran has uncovered evidence of a massacre: Taliban prisoners of war suffocated in containers, shot in the desert under the watch of American troops.

The film has been broadcast on national television in countries all over the world and has been screened by the European parliament. Human rights lawyers are calling for investigation into whether U.S. forces are guilty of war crimes. But no U.S. media outlet has broadcast the film.

is it true that we have to wait, until international groups are taking action?

61. Here's what I think
Someone is playing with the Bush crime family like a cat does with a mouse. When the initial pictures were exposed to the public, we saw a shell-shocked administration scrambling to explain "it was done at the hands of just a few low-level military personnel" and "we don't in any way condone torture." Then a handful more of the pictures were released that were slightly worse than the first set. This cabal expressed shock! Shock I tell you! Rumsfeld's testimony before Congress was very telling in that he was more pissed that someone released the pictures, not that the torture had actually taken place.

After getting him to testify under oath that he in no way approved of the torture, and watching Bush's feigned horror of what happened, we then saw the release of memos that directly linked the approval to the highest levels of this administration. The powers that be, I believe, has all of the evidence to hang this cabal.

Next we will see the more gruesome photos that exist, and possibly even some of the tapes that were made raping women and children in Abu Ghraib. I think Reagan's death has sidestepped this plan for a few days but mark my words, the proverbial shit is going to hit the fan within the next 2 or 3 weeks. The next set of pictures will be released to regain the nation's attention and then BLAM! They will release Bush's directive ordering torture to take place.

Buh Bye Bushie.

69. That's my hope, Oaf
Supposedly, all of the shit that went down in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere in Iraq was photographed and videotaped, the electronic media stored and reproduced on computers and distributed on cd. Some of the soldiers with computers reportedly had torture photos as their Windows wallpaper. The files, not surprisingly, were widespread. All we need is one set of those cd's to be in the hands of someone who isn't sucking the BFEE teat, and the scenario you describe becomes likely.

Once there's a hole in the dam, then I believe that the instinct for self-preservation will kick in, and someone will start producing documentation linking the torture to the highest levels of the administration. If all of this actually goes down, it will be next to impossible for even Fox news to bury it.

I keep praying for the truth to come to light and set this nation free.

80. I think you could be right. According to Mike Ruppert, it's the CIA
that is orchestrating a "coup", which will end with the indictment of Bush, Cheney (over the Plame case), and most of the rest of his Cabinet.

I have a dream.....

Were we back in "Roman Empire" times, we would see the trees along Pennsylvania Avenue being prepared for a major "necktie party".

What form will justice take with this bunch? Will president-elect Kerry step in and grant pardons, or will he demand full throttle investigation, prosecution, and punishment? These are questions I have been asking Kerry's office for months now, without response on their part. This nation cannot afford to let the neonazicon-fascists escape justice. They must be politically destroyed, a silver stake through the heart if you will, never again to be allowed to harm this nation. Anything less would indicate, in my opinion, collusion on the part of those seeking mercy for these cold-blooded murderers and war-criminals. How Kerry handles this, will be a true indication of his fortitude, and his commitment to our democracy.

I'm sure you are correct.

We are witnessing a blatant CIA led Coup d'Etat on our own soil. If you had to rank the CIA's skills, there is one which will come out on top and it is the ability to overthrow governments. They have it down to an art form. Today we cheer them on because we loathe Bush.

But consider.... show me one case where a CIA led coup turned out well. Please, just show me one.

I sit here and watch what is taking place, and it scares the daylights out of me.

she said something that made a lot of sense to me. She said that the reason for this abuse is the private contractors. We have paid them soooo much money that they felt pressured to provide what their masters were looking for. Since what they were looking for did not exist, the torture became worse and worse.

That and the fact that they are pure evil scum.

151. OMG. That makes it utterly believable. Private contractors..
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 04:59 PM by lostnfound
Whatever last tiny smattering of hope I had, that it wasn't true, has just been decimated.

Some of the private contractors were being hired out of death squads, known killers and brutes. I remember stories on FSRN about human rights criminals, wanted in other countries, being hired for this.

Not to say that you couldn't have the situation without it -- after all, US facilities like SOA/WHISC trained them -- but it makes it not just possible but expected.

I feel sick and furious. I will be calling my congressman tomorrow.

99. A couple of questions
for those of you who know the ins and outs of this sickening story better than I do.

1) Does any documentation or testimony tie the torture to the WMD hunt?

2) Has any suitable explanation surface as to why this sickness was taped and placed on hard drives in the first place. Some, including Hersch, have stated/speculated that it was going to be used to blackmail vitims' honor upon their release, i.e. be shown to neighbors etc. But on the face of it, that doesn't make sense b/c it would also inflame and serve as proof (vs mere accounts from "disgruntled" former prisoners).

...or Iran-Contra. Everyone must know about what this imperialistic, militaristic, raping, greedy, degradating, sickening excuse of a government is capable of doing and letting happen.

There'll be no laughing after this mess. America will suffer for years and we must see that bush is held accountable for what he has done.

109. This is a CONTINUATION of Iran/Contra...
...in that it involves many of the same Players. Americans tend to forget that most of Bush's* administration is made up of former Reagan/Bush officials. They were only waiting for another dunce in chief to start up where they left off.

Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 07:14 PM by higher class
Same countries involved (with the addition of Afghanistan)
Same players involved.
Same motivations involved.
Same tools - weapons and drugs.
Same benefits involved and them some - bulging profits for a few, theft of rights of the citizens of this country, depopulation.

And, they benefit in progressing towards privatization more speedily.

110. Let's think this through
If those pics are released, how will that affect the troops currently in Iraq. Afghanistan, and all across the world? Think for a moment. I know we all want Bush to get what he deserves. And we all want the rest of the cabal to face the consequences....but think for one moment of the outrage from the entire muslim religion.

Here is what I would suggest....offer Bushco an exit strategy. He has 48 hours to voice his and his entire administration resignation. Cheny, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, Wolfowitz, Feith, Pearle, all must write their resignations, effective immediately....or else the pics get published...and the US suffers the consquences. AND THERE WILL BE DIRE CONSEQUENCES THAT ALL THE NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WEAPONS CANNOT DETER.

This still gives the republican party a little time to cobble together a new candidate for the November elections at which in the interim, government would be run by the Congress and Senate. They would appoint an interim White House resident with very very limited powers....basically keeping the seat warm until November.

Should he refuse, then publish all of the pics. It would be far far better for the US that he resign....torturing children will inflame the entire world. I say this in all seriousness -it would mean the end of the USA as we know it.

Some might suggest that this smacks of extortion....I would rather say that this is precisely what the US has done to Iraqi people...they imprison family members in the hopes that wanted people come forward and turn themselves in.........I would rather call this Karma in action.

128. I agree there has a be preparation for the outrage.
I was thinking that an International Day of Protest/Solidarity with the Victims of the Bush Administration so it isn't just Muslims expressing their outrage but I think your idea more fully addressing the gravity of the situation that will prevail if photos are released.

156. Blackmail?
Telling BushCo to resign or the next batch of photos will be released is blackmail isn't it? I don't think it would work either. These people will not give up power. Aside from voting them out of office, which many now feel can't be done due to the voting machines, the only way to get rid of them is to renew the Special Prosecutor to go after them. What is needed is documentation signed by the Pres. approving of torture. I suspect that exists. It may even be leaked out.It is getting obvious that someone or a group is leaking documents.

This Admin. is rotten to the core and I believe that the Plutocracy is starting to see that BushCo is a huge negative to Corporate, Mulit-Corp Amerika. It isn't really the scandals that bother the Plutocracy unless they can be proven beyond doubt, it's the bungling in Iraq and Afghanistan that are the issue. The CIA works for Capitalists, not a specific Govt. in power. This may indeed be the group that is working to make damn sure that BushCo goes down and down hard.

160. Right. No one wants to buy the tee shirts of a despised country.
I realize that is crass but part of the marketing of many
products is based on people from other countries thinking that
America is "the best" a place where anyone can become a millionaire land of the free home of the brave. If we are seen as a despicable bunch of losers then who will prize our goods? Not my thoughts but they may be the thoughts of corporate America.
