My God!I Forgot How Good the movie "Wag The Dog" was!
Saw it last night on dvd. Saw it in the theater & didn't care for it.I was younger & bored with the subject matter. But watching it last night was like seeing it for the 1st time. LOVED IT! I know Repubs LOVE to claim is as their own & claim it was made about Clinton! Dustin Hoffman stole the show IMO! Willie Nelson was also good! Anyone feel this film is underated?

1. I loved the film too
I seen it on Bravo! the other day. It was a real entertaining movie, especially when they were creating the fake war scenes.

3. The script was actually influenced by Bush Sr's sex scandal
Washington Times broke the story that a Republican fundraiser, Craig Spence, was running an underage prostutition ring, and had invited a few underage prostitutes for "midnight tours" of the White House, and even had one of the girls claim to have seen Bush Sr. there.

The writers had Bush Sr in mind, but then the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, which was an amazing coincidence it seems. On the DVD they mention they were thinking up the story during GW I.

5. If it was about Bush I
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 09:17 AM by VermontDem2004
how come I remember De Niro saying something like 'All we saw during the gulf war was a camera shot hitting a building and the whole world bought the war.'

This is all it says under the Trivia at IMDB

After this film started production and before its release, US President Bill Clinton became involved in a sex scandal and threatened military action against Iraq.

6. The movie is based upon this book
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345366638/qid=1060870596/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/102-4568079-8659316?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

American Hero Larry Beinhart. In the book no names have been changed to protect the guilty. Amazon has the first few pages online, so go and have a read.

8. No, it definitely was not about President Clinton...
The book "Wag the Dog" was based on, Larry Beinhart's "American Hero," was not only specifically set during Gulf War I, it also featured "fictional" characters like President George Herbert Walker Bush, Secretary of State James Baker, and Lee Atwater.

Also, remember that we did not see the kind of outrageous P.R. stunts depicted in "Wag the Dog" during Clinton's military actions in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, or Iraq. However, we did see them recently during Shrub's Iraq war: "Saving Private Lynch" and the Hollywood-style staged statue toppling. We know now that the original Private Lynch story was about 90-95% BS, and that tight camera angles were used during the statue toppling to obscure the fact that very few Iraqis were participants. Those two events could've been outtakes of "Wag the Dog," along with all the lies the Shrub junta told to promote the war in the first place.

9. You're right about Private Lynch
I thought about her right away while I was watching the movie on Bravo last night. But I also thought about Clinton right away when they brought up the "firefly girl"(?) The Clinton & Monica thing was reported on so much and for so long that I can't forget it, and it's automatically what I think of when there's the situation of a president messing with a young girl. The right-wing were sure successful with that, I'm sorry to say.
