Simi Valley. THAT Simi Valley
Ironic, isn't it?

Reagan's library is located in the infamous town that gave us the Rodney King verdict.

I remember all the looting and riots that ensued.

1. Sums it all up
in a way. I didn't remember that the Rodney King incident happened in Simi Valley. Thanks for the reminder.

Ironic it is.

5. I worked with the jury forewoman. We got death threats at work.
That wasn't much fun. She retired and last I heard lives somewhere like Montana or Idaho in seclusion.

Simi Valley is very white, and very bigoted. Our Congressman is a nasty little pig, and was the former mayor of Simi.

Simi was also infamous years ago too for a case of the police having sex with underage explorer scouts. "Slimy Valley" was its nickname then.

Our local paper yesterday had a long story on how the Reagan Library came to be. Reagan wanted a location near Stanford, but Stanford said no. So long story short, it's here because they got the land for free. Typical GOP values at work here. No surprise.

9. Her name is Dorothy Bailey, and she wa a project manager
who told her staff she was called on jury duty but she couln't talk about what case she was on (naturally). She had been gone for several months before we found out she was on "THAT trial."

We only found out when the paper was going to print the names & addresses of the jury. It was someone's bright idea to pass around the office a Hallmark card for her, a "hang in there, we're behind you" one. I know several people were so pissed when they found out what case she was on that they refused to sign the card. Things were tense around the office for awhile but we weren't allowed to talk about it.

She never did come back to work. She retired immediately afterwards, wrote a book which went nowhere, and we never saw or heard from her again.

I remember being quite scared when the verdict was announced and the riots started. The receptionist had to handle quite a few wacky phone calls, and we had rent-a-cops in the lobby, IIRC.

7. This subject came up in break in my French class.
The African american students in the class were highly agitated. One made the comment that she was sure that the black people would be told to stay away. Made me sick that Reagan was that kind of president.

8. There was one black gentleman in Reagan's cabinet
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 02:09 PM by CatWoman
can't remember his name, or cabinet position, but I do recall that Reagan didn't know the man's name, or that he was actually in his cabinet.

on edit: it was Samuel R. Pierce, Jr.

10. Simi Valley is very white bread and very conservative.
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 02:17 PM by Cleita
It's no accident that the Reagan library is located there. It's no accident, on account of a large percentage of the residents who are Los Angeles law enforcement officers, that the verdict in the Rodney King verdict favored the defendent law enforcement officers.

Putting the library there only underlines Republican hypocrisy. Republican politicians only give lip service to minorities to get their votes. You know what they really value by their actions not their words. On edit, the only people of color allowed in Simi Valley are the maids and gardeners.
