1. Can't imagine who would...
But at the same time let's not forget....although he was beloved by millions of Americans for pretending to be a kindly intelligent person in public, in real life the Gipper was a mean-spirited simpleton.

2. I won't.
Reagan was a polarizing figure. He was both loved and hated by many.

I try not to be cruel, but I understand where many people are coming from.

Just like if Bill Clinton died, would you expect to see any sympathy at Free Republic? Doubtful. Many there have been wishing his death for years.

4. I do have a problem with him getting
credit for ending the cold war; but that' just because it's not historically accurate. But that's not enough for me to slam into people who will say nice things about him.

6. You mean people like Kerry and Kucinich ?
When people are public figures, there is a certain degree of decorum expected. Whether we like it or not is irrelevant. That's just the way it is. If they want to be irreverent, they can be Hunter S Thompson... :)

7. No
Just shut the hell up when some of US don't follow the same path and stop wringing your hands about what the right wing will think about us (you in the figurative sense) because if they can't find examples of bad behavior to make DU bad they'll send people in to make it up.

8. No, they're only being Democrats...
and showing the humanistic qualities that we're all supposed to have.

No matter how terrible Reagan's presidency was for the country (and it was undeniably bad), it does no good to rehash it now that he's dead. Showing a little humanity is a good thing.

Besides, we need to focus on the current bozo in the White House and not some guy who left the WH 20 years ago, before many DUers were even born.

9. I won't hold it against them
Things people say don't bother me for long. I don't feel like saying anything bad about Reagan (nothing nice either) and I just wish it would all fade away and become a distant memory. It is a waste of my time and energy to be filled with hate at someone who is already dead.

10. The sympathy is expoited by the Right
In the same way that the "save the troops" meme actually gave the invasion greater credibility.

Much of the synpathy is stirred up by the circumstances of Reagan's long drawn out living death and the human compassion for those who endured it.

Sympathy stops there.

16. Yep, everyone
I think public figures/politicians should be gracious. I like that Kerry says that Reagan left politics behind after 5. It's polite and is probably true. I believe that Kerry despises Reagan and his legacy. I support all the columnists and writers who expose what he did but a political figure should have decorum.

14. Is it possible to hate Bush and like Reagan?
It was Ronald Reagan who turned reactionary American conservatism into a relgion. Bush is his disciple. Thou shalt have no other god but Reagan. The only difference is that, while Reagan talked the charming talk and did less in fact, Bush pretends he's something else while sticking it to you with the other hand.

15. Why would I hold that against them?
Death is a time for mourning even our enemies. It is the civilized thing to do.

When a President dies, we are honoring not so much the person but the office when we mourn as a nation. It is a time when there are no politics involved and we simply mourn the loss of one who was once the leader of us all.

So, some praise him too much, and some condemn him to rot in hell-- big deal. Same thing happens at the funeral of Uncle Ned, although some of us think it a bit unseemly.

We'll have a week or so of national mourning that a President has died, as we always have, and soon enough we can go back to ripping him to shreds.

Most of us waited a while before we pissed on Nixon's grave. Why should Reagan be any different?
