Boo's at my local theatre at Farenhet 9/11 trailer
Just saw the New Harry Potter film this morning(The best yet!)& they showed tons of trailers! One of them being Farenheit 9/11.Now, there were mostly kids in the audience with their moms & there were about 3 or 4 mom's booing in the front row when thetrailer started.

Anyone think there could be fights this weekend when they show the trailers?

I hope there are fights too. That will create more publicity. More newscasts will end up showing clips from the movie and the trailer.

24. theater employees, more like it.
Think about it for a minute. How many of the major chains really want anything at all to do with a Michael Moore film? ANY Michael Moore film? How better to generate a good reason NOT TO show it than to say, "well, this film is poison. We had people booing the trailer, forchrissakes!" Mothers my ass. :tinfoilhat:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1146910/posts

The link deals with an article where the author tries to point to HP leading kids to witchcraft and all that.

The majority of the replies from the FReeps call BS on the author's central POV.

You may be surprised to know that many Freeps seem to love the Simpons, Family Guy and South Park as well as jazz, classical and other forms of music and cultural entertainment.

Not all of them are open mouth breathing hicks.

12. During Harry Potter?
You know there is NO movie I'm looking forward to more than F911 but I also think that it's important to gauge your audience correctly when you place a trailer in front of any given movie. I don't really think F911 fits well in front of Harry Potter or Shrek2 etc...likely to provoke an unthinking backlash over reflective thought.

Put it in front of adult dramas and action flicks fine...but Harry Potter? really? That just seems like a damn odd (and wrong) choice....almost wonder if that was deliberate.

68. I was thinking the same thing
Actually, I might be a little annoyed if I took my child to see a kid's movie and they showed that trailer. Even though, like you, I'm really looking forward to seeing it myself. Until they reach a certain age, I don't think kids should have such serious issues to worry about all the time, especially at a movie which is such an escapist activity. I certainly would want to protect smaller children from seeing the torture images, for example. I'm not saying those images are in the trailer. I haven't seen the trailer, and I have no idea what's in it. I just think kids should be exposed to politics gradually. They're not responsible for Bush.

78. chimpy?
I used to think that way. But then European friends alerted me to the fact that this protecting of American children is unnatural and unhealthy. The world over, children witness war and violence in their lands. Adults of other lands (who wish to God that childhood could be innocent) resent our sheltering our children from the sight of injustice and malevolence. Now I say it's better to raise children to know it and to repudiate it. They aren't going to live in a land that's free of it.

82. I see what you're saying, but I disagree.
I don't have children, but if I did, I would not let my children see those images until I thought they were old enough to handle it. I'm sorry that children in other parts of the world have to witness war and violence, but I can't believe that it's good for them. It is the war and violence itself that is unnatural and unhealthy, in my opinion. Heck, there are images I won't let myself see, because I think it serves no purpose and would probably give me nightmares. Obviously, children cannot and should not be shielded from everything. I actually think by the time they reach adulthood, kids in this country could be a lot better educated about politics than they are. But I just think you have to teach them gradually and in age-appropriate ways, not dump everything on them all at once. Kids today already have more stresses than I think is good for them.

Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 12:53 PM by vicman
but booing seems to be taking on a subtley different meaning in our society today. What you heard was, most likely, some kind of knee-jerk reaction contemptuous of free speech. But I bought the new Lou Reed live album a couple of months ago, and some members of the audience are heard clearly booing Lou after his arrival on the stage and into the first few songs of the record. Now why in the hell would anyone pay good money to go see an artist just to boo him? By the end of the record, no boo's are heard. Seems Lou might have won the evening. There's much evidence - via current news reports of commencement addresses - that loud and obnoxious booing is a newfound tool of a vocable few who believe that it is worth the attempt to instigate a Pavlovian crowd response which could be capable of short-circuiting the expression of any opinion the vocable's disagree with. Opposing views are simply shouted down with no danger of even being heard, let alone thought about.

On edit: does anyone have a memory of a scene in "Cabaret" in which sweet-faced brownshirted kids hijack a public picnic?

45. You may be right
but, on the CD, it doesn't sound like it to me.

Your second thought would be nice. I first saw "Bowling For Columbine" in a packed theater in NYC. The audience was so stunned by the facts paraded across the screen and by the sheer eloquence of Micheal Moore's storytelling that there was no capability to boo at the appearances of Charleton Heston or other Republican "worthies" on the screen.

I guess my contention is, throughout my life, I have observed that positively-focused people, sincerely trying to understand reality and working for change beneficial to the most human beings, never boo anything or anyone or even resort to expressions remotely resembling those disgusting sounds. They applaud enthusiastically when public statments make sense, but they don't try to drown out lies. Are we fighting with one hand tied behind our back? Maybe... but this has always been the definition of true courage for me.

I'll sleep better tonight thinking the youth of our nation hasn't gone completely off the deep end.

Self-serving factoid: during the tour where David Cross uttered the words in your signature, I was with him for the Dallas and Austin shows (and he definitely WAS booed during those shows - I was in the back and there was NO mistaking it). I complemented him on his courage for just stating the obvious. He replied, "I'm not courageous. The courageous people are the ones who go out and protest, get their heads busted by the cops."

Your quote comes from the late summer of 2002. Brave lad, no?

So they have the luxury of taking their pre-school age kids to weekday movies. They SHOULD be booing a film that exposes Bush - he's the best thing that ever happened to the idle rich! We know that they're rich enough to stay home - they probably have a chapter of FOBB - Friends of Barbara Bush.

41. It's the booing that makes them worthy of criticism.
I have friends who have sacrificed years of professional level incomes to stay home with their kids in the preschool years. That's admirable parenting for those who can afford it. I was thinking more of the women I saw in Bryn Mawr on a snow day last year. They had brought all their kids and nannies (and every one of them had nannies) to a local ice cream palace. The moms talked to each other, ignoring the kids. The nannies struggled to control them - and the kids were running around, screaming and generally acting up like mad - I think in the vain hope of getting Mommy to give them even a glance.

57. Been going on for generations
Where do you think the Mary Poppins character came from? Women who could afford it hired governesses/nannies for various reasons: so they could devote time to running complicated households, donate their time to charities or simply have time to themselves. These were not working women; they were married to wealthy men.

Hell, in days of yore "Well-bred" women did not nurse their own children. Babies were given over to wet nurses who lived apart from the family. Parents who did this had little contact with their offspring during the first few years of life.

46. School busses still on the road in Pennsylvania & Maryland
this morning. I think it's the last week of school here. See my reply above. I am not generalizing about all stay at home Moms, but it's a safe bet that the booers are staunch Republicans.

53. I hear ya
Sorry... got a little defensive there. *blush*

No doubt those women were bush party loyalists, and deserve whatever mocking anyone can dish out.

22. Was it the final preview or was it in the middle?
If it is in the middle and I hear any of that crap I will be standing up and applauding through the rest of the trailers.

26. Those were mature mothers, weren't they?
Good thing they were there, to show the kids how to act in a public forum.

67. Same here.
In SF, people have this habbit of hissssssssing at previews. Sometimes for dumbass reasons.

My stalk responces: "Sounds like steam escaping" "Must be snakes in here" or the one when some asshole hissssed during a pre-view of "Evita" (shoot me I LOVED the movie) "Oh Hissssssss my ass!".

I might have to actually see it in the theater, then!

61. I'm Going to Harry Potter This Weekend
With a moderate Republican I've been dating. (Yes, you heard me correctly - I'm dating a Republican).

After many conversations, I have converted her to "go McCain", in other words, she still counts herself as a Republican but she can no longer stand Bush. I'm working on getting her to change the rest of her tune. I personally believe she's just a small soul-search away from being a Democrat. Maybe F-911 will be the thing to push her over the brink.

74. Yeah, but it's a documentary
How many republicans see documentaries? at the theater?

I would think T-3 and other non-thinking-related movies would be more their speed.

79. Potter's director: "Bush is Voldemart, Fudge is Blair" (clearer in vol V)
Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 02:39 PM by robbedvoter
Alphonso Cuaron is very cool, R.K Rowlins as well...
And also, Connecticut is W's home state - the one he LOST in 2000 and will again. I guess I should get one of those Bush is Voldemart signs - as soon as someone posts the website - when I go to see the movie!
