O'Rourke: Gore Should Run in 2004
By running, Gore could help Dems define themselves

July 6, 2003

BY WILLIAM O'ROURKE

Al Gore should reconsider his decision not to run for the Democratic presidential nomination for 2004. Why? Look around at what is happening to the Democrats since Gore bowed out last December: the party splintering into its demographic pieces, name-calling among the jostling group running, conflicting and contradictory policies being touted.

2. It's called 'democracy'
Look into it. If you think politics gets rough here, look at countries with a healthy multiparty parliamentary democracy.

3. I don't care for Big Al but i'd like to see him run
It would give the dems a chance to remind the country of how bush stole the 2000 election. I hope they have enough sense to bring it up but you never know with these gutless democrats. Kerry and his "get over it" comment really irks me.

6. Hmmm. In the vein of cheap reality TV would you watch a boxing match
between Gore and Bush? I would. Gore would wipe the floor with him.

8. Gore had his chance.
He decided not to run. If he'd announced in Jan. he would be the front runner. Kind of late now. I honestly believe we have a field of good candidates at this point. A bit late for the rumors of Al, Biden, Clark, and Hillary.

Biden's acting strange these days. Talking about maybe yes, if we need him that bad. Who's saying we need him to run? We need him in the Senate! I respect him because I met him once at a YD's convention about 20 years ago. He was dead tired and it was late but he stayed up ad talked to a bunch of us for a long time.

Hillary ain't in the race because she thinks we're going to lose this time. Maybe the same with Al. Personally I'm happier with the real progressive candidates we have, at least we're hearing about some real issues instead of "lockboxes".

7. Especially given ALL the ammunition Gore will have THIS time.
Not that he didn't in 2000, but come 2004 he could wholly utilize the big 'ol "I told you so!" I'd certainly like to hear him say it.
