Wearing red on Friday to oppose Bush?
I got an e-mail advocating wearing red on Friday to oppose the current administration. Supposedly, this was done in parts of Europe to show opposition to Hitler (red was the color of the Allied Forces). Has anyone received an e-mail like this? I have the e-mail at work, but I'm not a t work right now, so it's not in front of me to copy and paste verbatim. I looked for some information on Snopes but couldn't find anything about it. It has the feel of an urban legend to me, but it may not be a bad idea whether or not the supposed origin is true or not. My only reservation is that red represents the right to most people these days (red states vs blue states). So if the right starts sending e-mails that says wearing red on Fridays is a show of support for Bush, there's going to be a lot of confusion. Otherwise, I guess the worst that can happen is that people just won't notice. Any thoughts or helpful information?

1. Haven't heard anything, myself, but that doesn't mean squat.
I'd do it to show opposition to bush - even if nobody noticed. When you get back to the office, you can double-check the email and post about it. I'm interested.

2. They could co-opt any color we use.
But I think the cat's out of the bag for our side as far as the "red on fridays" thing goes - any counter-campaign would take a while to build up.

3. I wear ...
white underwear every day in defiance of Bush.

Things of this nature are great, if everyone knows the significance of the action (wearing red). Unfortunately wearing red is not unusual, and I'll bet very few people would get it.

Now if there was a suggestion to wear your "Bush Sucks" t-shirt every Friday, that would work.

Cheers
Drifter

4. Well, I think that's part of the appeal.
Not everyone can go around wearing anti-Bush slogans, but anyone can wear red. The fact that wearing red isn't necessarily a political message means that most people will be able to get away with it even in their workplace. The e-mail I got just suggested a red article of clothing (like a necktie, perhaps?), not head-to-toe red. Of course, wearing red combined with an anti-Bush or pro-Dem or pro_Kerry button or something bearing a slogan (for those who can get away with it) will help establish the meaning of red on Fridays as being anti-Bush.

7. I think it's ironic. . . . .
That the fascisti have co-opted the color RED, for Gods sake, to signify the states where they hold sway. Red has always meant Left to me. Let's recapture our color and wear it on Fridays to oppose Der Fuhrer . . . :kick:

17. sorry, but red denoting states in a presidential election has ALWAYS
signified the challengin party. Blue has always signified the incumbent party.

By rights, Bush states should be shown as blue this time around and Kerry states should be red.

5. YES YES!
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 11:33 AM by MontecitoDem
We've been circulating this around Santa Barbara. Two fridays ago my son was playing with some other kids -- and they all were wearing red! A few of us mom's realized we were on the same page politically even though we'd never discussed it. It was great.

This is slowly spreading in our community. It's easy to do and may get some conversations going that wouldn't otherwise.

On edit: I have the info but not an email address:

*

Here's a simple idea that might turn big. I am going to try to do this - it's ideal - if it works we will feel much better - even if I am the only red shirt in town - no loss.

My name is Nadia Jensen and I have an idea for a quiet revolution.
Please take 5 minutes to read my email and then help me if you can: Here's some history behind this idea: When Norway was occupied by Germany in 1940,
Norwegian women began to knit RED caps for children as a way of letting everyone know that they did not like what was happening in their country, that they didn't like having their freedom taken away by the Nazis. My great aunt, Karin Knudson
Myrstad, was one of the women who knit red caps for her children and others.
Similarly, in Denmark, women knit red-white-and blue caps (colors of
the Allies) for
the very same reason.

The result was that whenever Norwegians and Danes left their homes --
to go
to the store, to work, etc, they could see that THE MAJORITY opposed
what was
going on in their country. As you know, both countries organized
effective
Resistance efforts and changed history -- everything that happened
began simply by
wearing red!!!! (or the colors of the Allies, in Denmark).

1. BACKGROUND: I believe, as many of us do, that at the very heart of
our
democracy is our right to oppose certain policies of our government.
Increasingly, our Government is redefining "freedom" in ways that make
too many Americans
perceive that it is risky to oppose his policies -- and, in particular,

current inroads about individual freedoms and policies in the U.S. and
abroad.
However, many of us DO oppose what our government is doing to
individual rights--
and I have an idea that will allow all of us to recognize each other
very
easily so we can see that WE ARE THE MAJORITY.

2. SO... I have been thinking that it's time to take action in a way
that is
effective and easy for all of us to do: Just wear red every Friday
between now
and election day.

Wear a little or a lot-- just be sure that when you leave your house to
go about your day -- to work, to school, to the store, to the gas station,
wherever you go in your daily routine -- that everyone who sees you will see
that you are wearing red because you believe in freedom and you don't agree with
our current administration's policies at home and abroad. I'm really certain that we'll see that lots of us wearing red for freedom -- because WE ARE THE

MAJORITY. We just need a way to show each other who we are!!! Between
now and election day, ask everyone you know to wear red for "Freedom Fridays".

3. I have already spread the word to friends and have had a very enthusiastic response. This email has been forwarded around the country by many who receive it - feel free to send in on to your friends and co-workers.

9. Yep, that's it!
That's the same e-mail I got. I'm still curious about whether the history is true, but I think I will go ahead and wear red this Friday anyway.

6. Yes - my wife received this e-mail last week

It came from a friend who is an avowed Bush-hater, so I think it has merit.

BTW, she'll have red on this Friday, I believe... :)

11. I can hardly wait 'til Friday
I'm in the St.Louis area and the Cardinals are playing at home. There will be an OCEAN OF RED in the stadium. Maybe that will help remove the curse of Der Fuhrer opening the baseball season here when he threw out the first ball. I'll be wearing RED Friday. Pass it on. We could be a movement!

12. But hopefully it will catch on
Even if only the politically-oriented get it at first - at the very least it will be a morale-booster. Eventually, more people will catch on if we all talk about it enough. Especially if as many of us as are able wear the buttons along with the red to help tie the two together.

19. I started wearing red last Friday.
I understand this has been an effective tool in fighting regimes outside of Hitler's. It can't hurt and eventually Bush will see all the red and maybe start panicking.

I'll get my one and only red shirt out. My 11 year old son just got out his red shirt and is excited about wearing it...he hates the chimp as much as I do. I'll tell my hubby to wear a red tie on Friday.

22. I wore a red t-shirt under a black polo last Friday but I don't think
anyone noticed. Early in the evening, I had dinner at a restaurant where I ran into an older gentleman wearing red who I am sure was not protesting Bush. I am beginning to think that, for those of us who are free to explain the symbolism of wearing red, that we get a red ribbon similar to the yellow ones that everyone is wearing. That will encourage others to ask us what the ribbon is for. Wearing red clothing is something that may or not mean anything to others,a red ribbon definitely means something.
