Defense fund for Patriot Act attrocities?

The bizarre case of Steve Kurtz, Artist/Professor and of the muslim lawyer from Oregon who was recently being harrassed by the FBI

lead me to believe that someone should start a defense fund for persons who are faced with mounting attorneys fees due to overzealous FBI and police actions.

Kurtz was detained, had his computers and manuscripts seized along with, get this, the body of his deceased wife! He is out, but the investigation is ongoing, thus endless legal expenses. A fund has been set up for his legal costs, but what about others who's lives are treated like tossed salad?

I'm sure that such an open ended fund would itself get the scrutiny of the FBI, though. Documents, computers, assets seized. Maybe it wouldn't work.
