Something a little fishy in Iraq ...
Something fishy (duh) is going on in Iraq. Something specific that struck me as I perused Late Breaking News.

Both of these threads appeared today and many thanks to those who participated but from these two threads, I found these two quotations from the cited sources.

"The U.S.-appointed Council favours its present leader, Ghazi Yawar,
a prominent tribal leader with support from various ethnic and
religious groups. Council members said U.S. governor Paul Bremer and
U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi were pressuring them to back Adnan
Pachachi, an 81-year-old former foreign minister."

Then I found this in another thread.

"The US-led coalition ruled out the two main Sunni Muslim contenders,
Adnan Pachachi and Ghazi al-Yawar, in the race to become Iraq
(news - web sites)'s first post-Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)
president, a senior official told AFP."

This is downthread a bit so you'll have to look for it.

Was this the product of disinformation, political negotiations, or does it signal an unknown condition in Iraq that has not been made public?

3. Ditto, IMO.
I don't think they're organized enough to even think about this.

2. There are so many "conflicting" reports, it's hard to sort it out. Is it
intentional or confusion? Calculated, or Clueless?

 Josh Marshall said last week that it was like a "Pirahana Feed"
with bits floating to the surface. I think what he said is the best way to look at it. We don't know and won't know til it sorts out.

4. I read all the conflicting reports as showing there is a big...
battle going on between the bush admin, the INC with Chalabi, and the UN in the middle. Each side is prematurely announcing their picks in hopes of forcing the other and when that doesn't work they accuse each other of trying to control the decision. Meanwhile, the Iraqi people have NO say.
