The Negro in World War II - Dad's Memorabilia
Edited on Sat May-29-04 05:40 PM by bigtree

This is a collection of my dad's memories from WWII, including his ship voyage from New Guinea, where he spent most of his time during the war. ( On the way home he and other blacks had to leave the integrated train as they passed through segregated states and board the Negro line.) There is also a newsletter from his ship and more.

I won't point out which soldier is my dad. All are special to me. I hope this collection will help some folks put aside their valid apprehensions about militarism and view these soldiers with an understanding of the sincerity and purpose of these troops. God bless our soldiers on this Memorial Day and beyond.

1. I had no idea that blacks were called Afro-Americans during WWII?
This is such news to me, because I thought that term was a product of the 1960's...live and learn!!!

Nice memorabilia. I've got alot of my dad's items as well (WWII vet). They had a real and just purpose.

6. 93rd Division?
My uncle was an officer with the 93rd. I found this letter in the Truman Library (Desegregation file) written by him which I thought interesting. It seems strange today, but in the context of 1946 it makes sense. We've come a long way!

Oh, the headline mistakenly says the 93rd served in the European Theater but the body of the letter clarifies that they were deployed to the Pacific.
