1. It was election day - primaries in NYC. Ultimately, OBL helped GOP

take the NYS - remember that fact when they say "if you vote against W, terrorists win"

al qaeda has never attacked a 'major event' (ie. national convention) or attacked on a 'significant date' (ie. july 4th)

their targets may be significant (WTC, Pentagon) but the timing (early on a weekday) looks for vulnerable times, not times when security will be increased...

3. Exactly.

They chose the flights they did because the knew they would be not be very full, fewer people to worry about. Post-Labor Day malaise.

4. 9-11 was the Muslim New Year

It changes a little each year, since the Muslim calendar is based on the moon, but 9-11 was on, or near, the Muslim New Year.

Muslim fundamentalists (and those who use them, e.g., Osama Bin Laden) are very influenced by numerology, and often coordinate their activities with "magic numbers." When the CIA began monitoring the increased (suspected) terrorist traffic and getting hits on "early September," you would think that would have been the first thing they would think. And it turns out they did -- that Bush ignored the warnings still sets my mind to boggling.

Terror warnings over this weekend, coupled with Cicada Mania around the Capital area, will help distract people from the increasing gasoline prices, which might otherwise be on their minds.
