CNN headline: Report: Most children who drown are supervised
Edited on Thu May-27-04 11:53 AM by trumad
Now check out the first paragraph...
(CNN) -- As 30 revelers enjoyed a pool party, 7-year-old Paolo Ayala sank to his death. At least two hours passed before anyone noticed his absence, and a cloudy pool meant two days would elapse before anyone would see his body at the bottom of the pool.

I can't go 3 minutes at a pool without checking on my 7 year old... The study defines supervision as being in someone's care, not in direct line of sight.

I define supervision as knowing where the fuck your young child is every couple of minutes...NOT 2 HOURS! Knuckleheads!

1. There you have it, let your toddler swim alone to keep her safe.
Freeper logic.

I'd imagine that was a typo, but it could be that most small children that swim are supervised, therefore most who drown were supervised.

2. OMG, that is sad.
Yeah, I don't count 'two hours unmissed' as supervised, sorry. That's awful.

3. A lot of people don't realize how quickly a child can drown
My ex used to drive me crazy when my kids were little. he always fell asleep at the pool when he was supposed to be watching them, so I had to watch them EVERY SECOND! His excuse: "they have a lifeguard." He didn't believe me when I told him the kids could drown while they were looking the other way.

Watching a kid at a pool is mandatory, every minute or two you need to see them. Mine are all teens now, all swam on swim team, and I still don't ever let anyone swim alone, period.

6. This is why last summer I I rarely took my kids to the pool.
Three small kids (1,4,and 5) that always take off in different directions and all needed to be watched constantly. You can't watch them all closely enough to be confident everyone is safe.

I felt guilty but we just couldn't go.

4. Just because there was 30 people there doesn't mean they
were supervised. You got a pool, a group of people, probably some drinking going on. One parent thinks the other parent is watching the child, others just don't pay attention. Sorry, but when my child is around the pool I want to know where he is every second. If I am not directly looking at him, my ears are tuned into his voice. The second I don't hear him I am looking for him.

5. Group "supervision" is the most dangerous
Everyone thinks someone else is watching their kid. :(

7. Forget the group....
it's my kids and my responsibility... I do not take my eye off of him and he can swim like a shark. Too many crazy ass people out there ...
