Perle badmouthing occupation of Iraq

Perle: Occupation "grave error"
Now that he's stepped down from the Defense Policy Board, Richard Perle is badmouthing the consequences of the war he helped design, the Toronto Star reports.

"Richard Perle, until recently a powerful adviser to U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, described U.S. policy in post-war Iraq as a failure. 'I would be the first to acknowledge we allowed the liberation (of Iraq) to subside into an occupation. And I think that was a grave error, and in some ways a continuing error,' said Perle, former chair of the influential Defence Policy Board, which advises the Pentagon. With violent resistance to the U.S.-led occupation showing no signs of ending, Perle said the biggest mistake in post-war policy 'was the failure to turn Iraq back to the Iraqis more or less immediately.'"

"'We didn't have to find ourselves in the role of occupier. We could have made the transition that is going to be made at the end of June more or less immediately,' he told BBC radio, referring to the U.S. and British plan to transfer political authority in Iraq to an interim government on June 30. This public criticism of U.S. policy from one of the leading advocates of the war — and a firm political ally of U.S. President George W. Bush — indicates just how much Bush's political fortunes are being damaged by post-war chaos."

Thank you Mr. 20/20 Hindsight. SOME of us figured that out BEFORE the war, but you and your ilk couldn't be bothered to listen.

This administration has unequivocably revealed any number of policy hucksters that need to be completely blacklisted from American politics, and right at the top is Squirrley Perley himself.

11. He's framing the argument,
making it seem as if the invasion was always about "liberation", and not about cememting US power and influence in the region (which is more likely what it was about).

12. WHAAAAAAAAAA???????
Get out of freaking town. We are talking about the third head in the Rummy, Wolfie, Perle Chimera of Evil. He must be trying to hitch a ride on the new "sane, peaceful" bandwagon before Fahrenheit 9-11 comes out so he can cash in.

13. He's shocked that what the Iraqis are throwing ain't flowers.
He and the rest of the "great minds" infesting the WH were expecting hordes of joyful Iraqis dancing in the streets, presenting the GIs with containers of oil, naming their kids Dumbernya, and donating to televangelists.

Those durn Ay-rabs just don't understand that we're there to help them when we shoot and bomb the citezenry, torture the "detainees", insult their women, and shoot up their mosques.

Guess we'll just have to nuke them into gratitude.

14. More squeaks from the rats abandoning ship.
< "Bush's political fortunes are being damaged by post-war chaos." >
And they helped create this mess. But now more of Bushes former supporters are disclaiming responsiblity? I really wonder who was and is calling the shots?
It could NOT have been Chimpie, could it ? could it?

Perle would not bail if this policy had been successful. Too bad if the buck just stops at the Patsy in Chief - and not his arrogant fools who led him into it.
I see a potential Nurenburg style trial here.

15. Just as much
Their troops were no longer welcome in Saudi Arabia. They have to be somewhere, pretty sure a pullout of Iraq would coincide with massive troop realignment to Afghanistan with a guard every 100meters along the pipeline

24. Did Perle step down?
"Now that he's stepped down from the Defense Policy Board..."

I'm aware that Perle relinquished his position as chair, but I thought he stayed on the board. Has he also now resigned from the board? When did that happen?

25. Fall back! Regroup! Reinvent yourselves!
The neocons are parasites jumping off the back of their dying host. Perle will disassociate himself from his own policies to avoid becoming a pariah. He'll be back.
