Haha -- * chased by a cicada

Bring It On, But Keep the Cicadas Away
We were going to mock Drudge for going with the 75-point type lead, "CHASED BY CICADAS." But then we thought, what the fuck? The president is fleeing from a fucking bug? He must read the Washington Post after all.

when the males make their squawky sounds. Was George vocalizing?

11. What a grotesque creature!
George W., I mean. I think cicadas are actually rather cute. There they are, able to get along by themselves, which is certainly more than * can do (even though he's much older than 17 years ...)

12. They are kinda cute, actually!
I actually saw the cicadas the last time they hatched (SHEESH! That was 17 years ago???) when I was being interviewed for a job at the AP. I had to go to Washington. One of the execs advised me with a chuckle that I might enjoy coming to town then because "yeah, the cicadas are here." And I really enjoyed 'em. They're funny. They reminded me of little flying Volkswagens. Not terribly bright. I can remember walking through Georgetown and stepping on dozens of them on the sidewalk after they'd crashed and burned - they were littering every horizontal surface in town. Sometimes they'd fly right into me, headlong into my stomach or chest or back with a big BONK! and then fall right to the ground, and (presumably) die. THey were kinda cute in a weird way. It was rather amusing. Big green funny-looking bugs all over the place and I wasn't a bit grossed out. And you'd go CRUNCH-CRUNCH-CRUNCH every time you walked around outside.

13. the "bonk" thing is pretty funny ...
They have tough little exoskeletons so it's like they're as well-armoured as ... well, as Bush on his bike.

Anyway, back home in southern Ontario, in the summers I would hear the loud "BZZZ!" of a (regular) cicada revving up, then promptly colliding with a tree trunk or the aluminum siding on our house. Adorably klutzy. I felt sorry for them and would go around rescuing them from the roads and sidewalks. Put them on your finger and they'd perch there, docile, for hours if you'd let them.
