Christopher Hitchens Reader endorsed by Dennis Miller
Hey--

Just got a catalog of forthcoming books including some from Nation Books. The entry for The Christopher Hitchens Reader is interesting for several reasons. The photo (presumably going on the cover?) is amazing: Hitchens holds a cigarette and is sitting behind an empty coffee pot, a 2/3 empty whiskey bottle, one empty glass and another half-empty one, and two ashtrays. He glares balefully at the reader. I especially like the only endorsement from a living person, Dennis Miller. (Edward Said and Joseph Heller said positive things about Hitchens years ago before he turned Bushite, and are in no position to express their disapproval now.) Miller's blurb: "The smartest guy I've seen on TV...the Rosetta stone of skepticism...the Mark McGwire of skeptics...he makes me look like a cheerleader."

You ARE a cheerleader, idiot! And so's Hitchens.

2. Someday the truth will come out and we'll discover that Hitchens
is on the GOP payroll. Either this slob got paid beaucoups bucks for converting or he's a complete two-faced jackass.

Having said that, his Kissinger documentary was incredible.

Now his slovenly self will be up there on all the political shows on cable, with his faux-haughty Limey accent, making the GOP look pretty unkempt.

4. Michael Moore could give him a run for his money----
in the slovenly department.

6. Hitchens is aiming for "cool" slobbiness, like Keith Richards...
While Michael Moore just IS a slob. It's obvious that Hitchens is putting time and effort into cultivating a persona (the cover of the book, the ever-present drink and cigarette, the air of studied dissipation, fr'inst), while Moore's slovenliness indicates to me that he realizes that there's more important things in this world than how you look.

3. Hitchens has got to be the most
miserable looking sob i've seen in a long time. He looks like he's slowly killing himself ala Leaving Las Vegas. Sold his soul to the devil and the bill is coming due.

9. Figures
Last time I went to my local TGIFridays, it looked so filthy that we just ordered a round of drinks. The service was bad too.

I wonder if Hitchens and Miller are friends? That would be one depressing little get-together.
