Christian Family Day at the ol' ballpark
What's the deal with taxpayer-funded baseball stadiums sponsoring "Christian Family Day"?

I moved to Missouri from San Francisco last year, and I can't possibly imagine one of the Bay Area teams hosting such an event. Yet the local stations have been running a promo for "Christian Family Day" at Kauffman Stadium at the end of the month, and gee, we'll get to hear "testimonials of faith" from some of the thumper players for the Royals like Sweeney etc and hoot 'n holler at the Christian band that's performing.

We're taxed out the butt here to fund a stadium that hosts a pathetic last-place team. Why is my tax money going to promote Christianity? Does any other city do this crap? Does this belong at a sporting event?

2. This would be as opposed to Buddhist Family Day, or Islamic
Family Day?

3. Nashville Predators have had share your faith nights...
...I had to go to the first one (free tickets don't you know) and I didn't see one person sharing their faith. I haven't been to any since then. The whole idea seems kind of slimy to me.

4. Eugh. Don't tell me this
I've supported the Royals since they came into the league. I've had to endure those three consecutive losses to the damn Yankees in the 1970s, the futility of 1980, the joy of 1985, and the great wasteland of all the years since, when they've been nothing more than a major league farm team.

Every time I give major league baseball another chance, something like this happens. I should just be through with it forever.

7. come over from the Dark Side...
The A's used to be a Kansas City team - you can feel good about supporting them, PLUS they don't suck (although, sadly, they too have suffered at the hands of the Yankees in the past).

Bonus: I've never been to a game at the Coli and had fundamentalist Christianity shoved down my throat.

My brother is a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the A's and the Raiders. I'd sooner lose body parts, you infernal fiend!

10. lol
Can I be chucked down the fiend scale a little if I'm not a Raiders fan? I've been to one Raiders game and it was, um, scary.

13. hell, no!
He's finally starting to hit.

I went to Kaufmann last week to take in an A's game (6-0 vs. KC this season, whoo-hoo) and I have to say that it's a nice facility and I wasn't taunted for wearing an A's cap. Everyone here is really...nice. Maybe it's all that Christianity, and I should just shaddup.

5. Might be OK---here's an idea.
It sounds like the "Christian Family" group got together & approached the ballpark owners with their plan. They'd promote the event, guarantee good attendance & raise some money for worthy causes. Perhaps your "last place team" isn't really packing them in? It might be a legit promotional deal.

Here's a suggestion: Let another group approach the owners--say, "Gay Pride". Lots of promotion in the community, a lively crowd at the ballpark & funds raised for AIDS research & support of AIDS patients.

The second proposal is just as worthy as the first. Surely the ballpark owners would leap at the chance! (Or maybe not.)

6. I'm a Christian, but I wouldn't go to that event
And if I did, I would demand equal time for believers of other faiths, etc.
