Moral Opportunism

Why is there so much moral rationalizing these days? I'm hearing folks on all sides making all kinds of hypocritical justifications for situational morality. Dershowitz making a case for torture in certain situations takes the cake.

'Pandora's Box' is not a quaint fairy tale...and you cannot open it "just a wee bit"...it is part of the bedrock mythos that western civilization is built upon.

Foundations are crumbling, what follows I dread.

2. It is ironic, but not surprising
To hear the right-wing, crusaders against "moral relativism" arguing that sodomy is at least not as heinous as decapitation.

3. Moral relativism is the conventional terminology,,,
and your point is spot on, but "moral opportunism" implies a willfull intention to compromise values while the other implies ignorance.

Declaring decapitation less heinous than sodomy is a type of ignorance unto itself.
