McCain Decoy? Is Hagel Kerry's "stunt" VP Choice?
Edited on Sat May-22-04 09:43 PM by FlashHarry

Whoops. On edit: that's Nebraska Republican senator (and constant thorn in Shrub's side) Chuck Hagel.

Somebody else brought this up, and it got me wondering. Personally, I'd still like to see a solid Dem ticket, but Hagel fits the profile much more than McCain, if you're after some sort of coalition ticket: he's young(ish), a Vietnam vet, a foreign policy wonk, Midwestern, fiscally conservative but not a Bible-thumping fundie.

Yes, I know about the alleged BBV thing, but there's no proof of any wrongdoing, so let's let that one lie for the moment.

What do you guys think?

(I'm still holding out for Kerry/Edwards, myself.)

1. Where do these ridiculous ideas come from?
A Republican is not welcome on the Democratic ticket.

Any Democrat proposing a Republican is not a Democrat.

4. Exactly

It is not as if we have a shortage of qualified candidates for VP.

We could nominate my dog Chico and he could do better than Cheney.
We need to support and highlight our own party, not theirs.

5. How manichean of you.
;-)

This is merely food for thought. I always thought the McCain thing was a feint, anyway. As I said, I'm holding out for Edwards (or maybe Richardson). But to say a Dem/GOP ticket is an impossibility is silly. Besides, there are plenty of people calling for a Kerry/Clark ticket. Clark's only been a Dem for a couple of months now!

6. If you have a
Democrat president with a Republican vp, if something happens to the Democrat president, voila! you suddenly have a Republican president. Think before you post such nonsense.

10. Read my previous post before you call it "nonsense."

Does the word hypothetical mean anything to you? I think a DEM/GOP ticket is about as likely as a Beatles reunion, but it's still fun to think about.

2. I agree Hagel may be a better choice than McCain
but not by much. I really, really, really want 2 Democrats to vote for.

3. Please no more republicans. If Kerry selects a republican,
he will lose too many Democrats.

7. I'd prefer Clark or Edwards. But having said that, I like Hagel on
a lot of things. He's pretty close to the kind of Republican I used to be. Guess that's to be expected since I'm from Iowa and the iowa Republicans were pretty moderate, maybe even liberal by today's standards. Fiscally responsible, socially a bit liberal, balanced on mose issues. Aware of the importance of Foreign Policy and some of the tradeoffs that had to be made, cautious about foreign involvement, preferred to avoid wars or armed intervention.

But, since the Republicans elected Reagan and he started their Right-Wing movement, I haven't been comfortable with any of their policies for a long time. Called myself Independent for years but then realized that I was supporting the Democratic Party on every issue around 1990.

Hagel's usually a no-nonsense, let's deal with the facts, kind of policy maker. So, he's not as interesting as McCain, but probably more effective.

8. If Kerry picks a Republican for VP,
it will be the biggest step toward a fascist one-party state we've seen yet. Many, many people - myself included - would not vote for such a ticket. Of course, if Hagel's on the ticket, that might not matter. And in that case, you can watch the exodus as people flee the country.

9. No, just a Republican who can think
I have a suggestion for the GOP, though. They can have it for free. What your party needs to do to save itself is to replace Cheney with McCain, not on the ticket, but right now. Health reasons..spending more time with his family...gotta help plan his gay daughter's wedding..whatever. Then, get Bush to do a Nixon and resign. There's not much time left, but McCain would probably stand a better chance than Ford did, especially if he doesn't pardon too many people. This is good advice, because the GOP is hurting, and they know it, or at least a lot of them do, and it's all because of this administration.
