Celebrity Athiest-Agnostics
Edited on Sat May-22-04 11:07 AM by Skinner
Why am i not surprised to see those who bring the most joy, and intelligence to culture dismiss superstition.

http://www.celebatheists.com/

My favorite celebs:

Janeane Garofalo
Garofalo was interviewed in the August 1995 edition of Showbiz: "She admits to having lost God. ('He just seems very man-made to me. There are so many theories, and not everyone can be right. It's human nature to need a religious crutch, and I don't begrudge anyone that. I just don't need one.')"

David Cross
Cross, along with his comedy partner Bob Odenkirk, are the guys behind Mr. Show on HBO. During the March 9, 1998 Politically Incorrect on ABC, Cross said "I was born Jewish, but I am an atheist. I don't believe in God."

Ani DiFranco, Recording Artist music
Ani DiFranco is a popular folk and rock artist who also runs her own record label, Righteous Babes Records. In the March 13, 2000 issue of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, columnist Jim Walsh interviewed Difranco. Here is an excerpt:

Q: What song proves to you that there is a God?

Ani: "I'm an atheist, for Chrissake!"

Gore Vidal
From the Secular Humanist Bulletin (Summer 1995) "Once people get hung up on theology, they've lost sanity forever. More people have been killed in the name of Jesus Christ than any other name in the history of the world."

"The idea of a good society is something you do
not need a religion and eternal punishment to buttress;
you need a religion if you are terrified of death."

Gore Vidal

"I'm a born-again atheist."

Gore Vidal

4. LOL ...
Hardly worth the cyberspace it takes up ... a nice collection of quotes out of context to make a case for what exactly?

I was with it until I started to look more closely at the quotes and the list ... the Dalai Lama is on the "ambiguous" list! Nearly fell out of my chair laughing--and then I did once I read the "well, someone on a chatboard once said a friend of his who knows a Buddhist said he read in a book that" line of reasoning. :eyes:

It's too bad that rather than limit the list to those for whom there is more definitive proof, they go for length rather than strength.

6. And the Dalai Lama once said,
to a group of visiting Sufis, who asked him to tell them the difference between Sufism and Buddhism:

"In Sufism, everything is.
In Buddhism, nothing is.
Same thing, no difference."

9. I'm sort of surprised to see Dave Barry's name on there.
I wonder how many of his fans would have second thoughts about him if they knew he was an atheist?
