3. perhaps not
NO! DAMMIT NO! The jet engine forum has been taken over by conspiracy theorists advocating the idea that George Bush Sr. invented the jet engine as a ploy to draw Russia into the cold war and establish US soverignty over Papua New Guinea! DON'T GO IN THERE. IT ISN'T SAFE.

2. I don't have any real facts so a (drunken) answer.
I once worked for GE and they sold a lot of things but jet engines weren't one of them, so we could try Boeing, McDonald/Douglas or that French company, whose name I can't remember.

7. Boeing and McDonald/Douglas make airplanes, not the engines
GE an Rolls Royce are two big names when it comes to jet engines.

6. GE made the engines in the planes I used to work on.
...turns out they make lots of 'em.

http://www.geae.com/engines/
GE Aircraft Engines is the world's leading manufacturer of large jet aircraft engines. GE offers products and services for commercial, corporate, military and marine applications that offer the performance and reliability that customers expect.

What a crapola boring answer...

8. I thought the manufacturers of the airplanes also made the engines.
I learn something everyday. Thanks.

10. GE, Rolls, and Pratt & Whitney
The 3 majors.

I've had engine failures (or pre-emptive shutdowns) with Rolls and P&W, but never with GE. GEs were hung on the 747s I flew for the last 10 years of my career.

Funny story:
Talking to a stranger in a bar somewhere.
"I flew here in a Rolls Royce."
"Uh...Rolls Royce doesn't make airplanes."
"Hell yes they do. That's what we got here on. I was sitting by the window, and right there on the engine it said Rolls Royce."
