Tony Blair has put on hold a decision to send 3,000 extra troops to Iraq to prevent the Government's handling of the war becoming an issue in the run-up to the June 10 European and local elections.
Downing Street and Geoff Hoon, Defence Secretary, said yesterday no decision had been taken on sending reinforcements, nor was any announcement imminent.
Charles Kennedy, Liberal Democrat leader, said it was "good news" if Mr Blair was reviewing plans to send additional troops.
"Heavy-handed" tactics by American forces had been unacceptable and counter-productive and the Lib-Dems would not support extra troops being used "to further this failing strategy
