1. Hmmm...

Here's something scary.

Check out the "donate" window in the bottom right of the page. For me it said, "Hi, Nerfbag. Help us make..." "Nerfbag" is what I put in as my "name" under Windoze XP.

2. Go to grc.com and check your "shields" on your pc...
you'll probably find that your computer name is publicly available to every site you visit.

20. by the way, thanks too.
that site was really useful. now i can set my poor parents at ease that their machine is not 'secretly enslaved to a hacker ring' while they are asleep.

heh, it's funny being the techie for your aged parents. it's shameful, but i find a touch of humor watching them handle CDs and remote controls like eggshells. but then they've seen stuff that's mere history to me. heh, in a few decades i too will be in their situation, no?

5. Is Nerfbag also your username at Amazon?
If so and your Amazon cookie hasn't expired, it's just them recognizing you from your account, the same way DU knows you from your cookie. The site the ad's planted on has no idea what your name is, there's nothing nefarious going on.

It isn't. I only used Nerfbag as an off-the-cuff name when I installed XP.

Try swinging by Amazon and see how they greet you on the front page. Maybe someone else in your household is registered with that name.

12. Yeah, I understood what you were talking about...
But since no one else lives here, I didn't consider it.

However, I figured it out, and you were right. I looked through all the cookies on my system, and there is one with "Nerfbag" associated with Amazon. My daughter probably did this.

Okay...I can remove the :tinfoilhat: now. Thanks. :-)

It's unnerving, I know :)

On edit: You can turn that off, BTW. I did it long ago. If I remember right, it's somewhere in your account preferences page at Amazon.

17. Done

That's one reason it confused me. I have options set so that I'm not perpetually logged in to Amazon, but I didn't think to check things my daughter does when she's here.

Again, thanks. I try to keep myself educated about Net security and privacy, but there are vast gaps in my knowledge.

22. It's the Amazon "Honor" System
"Can I prevent the payboxes from greeting me by name?

Yes. You can determine whether the Amazon Honor System payboxes greet you by name. If you would like to turn off name recognition, please visit Your Account at Amazon.com. Under "Your Account Settings" click on "Updating your communication preferences." Then, simply click the appropriate check box. Please note that your browser may cache (store) graphics files for a period of time, so you may still see your name at recently visited sites."

29. Port 443 is the conventional port
for secure sockets. It doesn't make any sense to serve the linked image that way, their server shouldn't attempt a secure connection until after you've opted for it by clicking the image. Really odd, really dumb.

6. I think the real purpose of the delay in finding a distributor . . .
Edited on Thu May-20-04 02:36 AM by taquinas101
is not to prevent the distribution of the movie, which is inevitable, but to simply give the GOP propaganda machine some lead time to destroy Michael Moore's character and credibility by the time the movie is introduced.

The GOP gameplan:

1. Repeatedly accuse Michael Moore of being greedy, overweight, opportunistic, a liberal elitist, hating America, being unpatriotic, atheistic, etc. Do not let the truth get in the way.

2. Publicize that folks whom Americans generally resent (such as the French) loved the movie.

3. Find or invent some inaccuracy, however inconsequential, and repeat it again and again. A great way to do this is to start airing segments out of context.

The bottom line is to use the lead time to minimize the political damage before his movie gets released in the U.S. Don't allow U.S. citizens to make up their own minds by viewing the film, make their minds up for them by repeatedly characterizing the movie before hand.

He's a middle-class white boy whining about losing a job, then undoubtedly gets his trash movie funded by some zillionaire like Scaife, and goes on all the right-wing talk shows to promote it...

...and he calls himself a REBEL?

"Yeah, I'm Whitey Whitebread from the 'burbs. I made a movie defending the STATUS QUO. I'm a REBEL!"

21. Doofus
Yeah, I actually wasted a good three minutes of my valuable night looking at this bottom-feeder's website. He looks like one of these clean-cut young guys who stood outside the SF Civic Center wailing and moaning about gay marriage just a little too earnestly, if you ask me. Dude, really. Do yourself, and all of us, a favor & just come out of the closet.

Of course, I’ve noticed that Moore’s fans may be some of the least tolerant people in the world. I’ve actually received death threats from people who claim that it’s important to be heard, but demand that I shut up… I guess the 1st Amendment only applies when we’re at a protest or are demanding redistribution of wealth…

"We're at a protest or are demanding redistribution of wealth?"

...Doofus.

19. This guy is a horrible writer. Typical RW chimp
He accuses Michael Moore of pushing the truth to far just to promote his films AND YET this guys TITLE to his FILM is "Michael Moore Hates America". A claim that he cannot prove.

So let's see - Moore pushes the truth to sell his stuff.

RW hypocrite claims that Moore hates America to sell his stuff.

BTW, since when did Moore make a documentary about the average American being evil and NOT making the best out of life? I must have missed that one.

RW Mike WannabelikeMoore needs to get a life.

30. Sean Hannity & GOP Hate America
Edited on Thu May-20-04 07:39 AM by cryingshame
Sean Hannity apparently cheered when ONE Sarin tinged bomb was found... apparently he thinks it's a GOOD thing our troops may occassionally be exposed to a deadly nerve agent that wasn't secured when the US troops invaded Iraq because we didn't use enough troops to do the job right.

The GOP don't want open governement and accountabilty with the Iraq Torture Scandal. And NOT holding hearings would inflame the Iraqis against our troops even more then they are now. Besides, don't the troops in Iraq who did NOT torture Iraqis deserve to have the corrupt and guilty parties exposed so they themselves aren't associated with such misdeeds?

Thank Heaven for Mike Moore, who can skewer the hypocracy and corruption in a way that is much more palatable for the public then either CNN or the NYTimes.

His "documentary" will sell about 100 copies, 95 of which will be used as ornaments on Richard Mellon Scaife's Christmas Tree. The other five will be bought by Rupert Murdoch and given to the five lucky employees of NewsCorp whose name got picked out of the "employee who gets a christmas present" hat.

43. "If you don't support your team..."
In the America At War episode of SOUTH PARK, the episode ended with Stan saying "If you don't support your team, then get out of the stadium." This is a variation of the old line "America: Love it or Leave it", or "If you don't like it here, then get out."

MY response was, "Support your team all you want, but if they start raping the other team's cheerleaders, do you keep supporting them, or do you say STOP?"

Problem is, if you DO stand up and say STOP, your fellow supporters attack you for your lack of team spirit. You don't "Support your team when things get tough." The announcers are screaming "Dear God why won't anybody stop them?!", but then that's just the media attacking these all-american heroes, and you musn't let the media focus on the whole team for the frat-like behaviour of a few bad-eggs.

Meanwhile, the cheerleaders won't stop screaming.

There were some of us who said STOP, but we just typed it on our BLOGS. Still, fight the power, man.

My point? No matter what the Bush administration is caught doing, the right-wing fundies will ALWAYS champion their cause, and denounce people like Mikey Moore and anyone who actually does something other than get indignant as unpatriotic scum. Moore isn't attacking Bush, he's attacking America. You can't do anything about R-Nuts like that.

Except blog, that is. Blog to the extreme. That'll show 'em.
