The earth is the center of the Universe
that's what my Fundie mom told me earlier this evening. At first I thought she was kidding, but then she also believes that Dinosaurs and man were on the Earth together, and that Noah made a choice to not allow the Dinosaurs on board.

She is serious. How many other members of the 'Armageddon Lobby' believe this?? Didn't we dispense with this notion about the time of Galileo??

Has anyone else heard this new heresy against logic and science???

in which a large ball was placed upon the earth. The ball didn't roll off the earth, thus proving that the earth was flat.

God created the world with just enough resources until he returns (that's why she refuses to recycle). She FIRMLY believes that she will never die.

When I attempted to discuss with her that the Earth was on a looong arm of the Milky Way she just got angry.

Anger is a GOP virtue.

Through the 3 telescopes we have there. But she has been pre-conditioned to see it only as a false reality.

She is INCAPABLE of seeing anything else.........and it is soooo sad. Her IQ is in the 170's, yet she refuses to allow in anything that does not fit into her world-view.

PS - the indicators of schizophrenia are all there.

I occasionally worry for my children (runs in the family)

7. Jesus.
> Didn't we dispense with this notion about the time of Galileo?

The human race has never truly dispensed with any notion, ever. We are great recyclers of ideas, good and bad. At times it seems that the more nonsensical the idea, the more we cling to it steadfastly, in stubborn opposition to the truth. The more obvious the truth, the more steadfast is our resolve to ignore it. One need look no further than the true believers in the 9/11 controlled demolition theory on this forum to understand this concept.
The fundamental problem with this human/dinosaur cohabitation theory is that there is brutal, obvious, incontrovertible evidence that it's total bunk. In this area, the science is not at all clouded. Should one choose to forsake the science, and declare that the scientific evidence is but a mere ruse to test the faithful, then why not dispense with *all* scientific knowledge? Electricity works because of magic. Cars run on fairie dust. Your television is full of tiny costumed monsters.
And if that's what you want to believe, then fine. You, like all good Americans, are entitled to your opinion. But please, for the love of God and science and everything that both of those entities cherish, do not teach such nonsense in our public schools.

:)

9. It's all perspective
You know those models of the solar system, where you have the sun, and all the planets revolve around it, and you have the little moons revolving around the planets.

Reach down and pick it up by the Earth. Suddenly the whole thing revolves around the Earth, though not as smoothly.

Placing the sun at the center makes the math easier, that's all.

That Noah and the dinosaurs stuff is wack, though. Ask her where they are in the Bible. Largest damn things on the planet (bigger than the arc) and no one ever mentions them? And god said all the animals, didn't he? Noah disobeyed, then.

just look in Genesis.

Genesis 19:85
And lo, immediately after the kangaroos made it aboard, Noah latchethed the velvet rope at the end of the ramp of the mighty ark, right before the first Tyrannosaurus made it aboard. "Begone, ye smelly reptiles", said Noah. "Fuck!" uttered the Tyrannosaurus. And the Lord saw that it was good that Noah had turnedeth away also the Stegosaurus and the Brachiosaurus, and all of the evil Allosauri away, damning them to drown in the waves that were the Lord's judgement.

Your mom is right.

22. Dinosaurs caused my divorce...

Well, not really, but I trace the decay of my relationship with my ex-wife to an argument we had about the existence of dinosaurs a few years into our marriage that left me stunned and confused. It the first time I'd encountered someone close to me who truly believed that if dinosaurs existed at all -- a big "if" in her mind -- they roamed the Earth with humans. I also didn't understand how her bassackwards views on such things had managed to escape my notice until then.

This was also the same night we had a lengthy discussion about barbed wire. She insisted it was called "Bob Wire" because it was invented by some guy named Bob. (With a certain accent, "barbed wire" comes out sounding like bob'wahr.")

32. Possibly...

She's still the most physically attractive woman with whom I've ever had a relationship.

But, damn, I thought she was smart too. At the time we met she was getting a degree in math, and she eventually received her PhD in mathematics and is currently a professor. I do not see how she reconciles her education with her odd beliefs about some things.

I was able to convince her on the "barbed wire" thing. For her, the jury is still out on dinosaurs.

23. Tell her she is right
Since the universe extends infinitely in every direction, and is expanding, earth is as close to the center as anything. It's the same infinite distance to the edge in every direction.

If you really want to blow her mind, tell her that you are the center of the universe. It extends infinitely in every direction from where you are.

I would not try to reason with her.

it's like they're from the dark ages.

They seem schizophrenic to me. You can't argue with them, there's nothing to argue about. Okay, you CAN argue and demolish their arguments in two seconds, but they (at least in my experience) just fall back on the "I know what the bible says, and that's what I have to go by".

Of course the bible contradicts them, too, but they will ignore that.

the Earth is the centre of the Universe. Apparently we Earthlings rate God's special attention.

Ignore any cosmological implications. The Bible is not a science textbook.

40. Do this...
Take a piece of paper and place it in front of your mother.

Draw a spiral shape in the top left corner of the paper (not too big).

Now, take a red pen and place a small dot on the outside arm of the spiral.

OK...now fill the paper with spirals, and circles and blobs such that little doodles fill the entire page.

Now, tell your mom that you will go to Kinkos, get a few thousand of your pages copied and then you will lay them out all over the yard.

Explain to her that we know from obser-fuckin-vation (you can leave out the fuckin part) that there are millions more of these galaxies in the universe and the sheets all over the yard don't even begin to account for all of the galaxies.

Repeat - we know this from obser-fuckin-vation!

Now ask her, how do you derive your knowledge? If it is from a 2000 to 3000 year old document, then point out that she is delusional and needs to be hospitalized.
