a warning on pbs
My memory has gone into steep decline lately so forgive my not being able to furnish names or url's
The other night a very brave woman, a Ph.d from Harvard and the Kennedy School of Government was talking about her trip around the world where she managed to have interviews with terrorists of many different beliefs but with one common thread - they despise america and all those who represent it.
They all cited three main reasons for their continued hatred of america - the constant humilitiation foisted on them, our arrogant hypocritical attitude of superiority and our meddling in their cultures by trying to force christianity down their throats. To them it is an insult akin to saying their religion and belief is nonsense.
Most of them also made the following comment (or made a point) that Americans are ignorant louts who are concerned with one thing only - their cars and possessions and it doesnt matter who they stomp on to get it.

2. youre right
but having a Ph.d somehow resonates better with the unwashed masses. She has a Ph.d therefore she knows what she is talking about. Common sense has died a sudden death and is being replaced by pseudo intellectuals

4. I think I saw her on C-SPAN last week.
She had some very interesting things to say, and for once, a lot of the callers had insightful questions.

Humiliation. Arrogance. Christianity. When will we learn to mind our own business?

7. We need to be careful to not be isolationistic, however
we as a people need to stand up and say to our fellow humanity that "We recognize you as human beings, the same as ourselves, your beliefs and way of life is just as valid as our own."

The US seems to continue to act as the schoolyard bully of the world. Picking on others for being different or weaker. Electing a self titled "class clown" and cowboy as president just exacerbates the problems.

I wish we could have a political candidate that would have the guts to say
1) There is no ONE single correct religion, get over yourselves and get along with each other.
2) There is no "white-man's burden" or "manifest destiny" of any sort. We are not the chosen people of some higher deity, he/she does NOT bless us, and we have no moral authority to preach to others.
3) The planet belongs to all living species, not just humans, and certainly not just Americans. Lets join together to protect it.

I swear 50% of America needs to be spanked and sent to their room with no dinner like the fat spoiled brats they are.

8. Hegemony or Survival--
Edited on Wed May-19-04 03:20 PM by beam_me_up
The title of Chomsky's new book. Everyone concerned about these issues should read the book or listen to the talking book--both available from amazon and other outlets. It covers the history of American hegemony in depth and expresses very clearly why it now poses grave economic, political and ecological threats to the whole of humanity. We must educate ourselves and oneanother to begin to turn the course of history.

If you'd like to listen to the talking book but haven't the resources to purchase it, please private me.

Edit: typo

10. So?

I kind of doubt anyone described as a self-avowed terrorist will win anybody's sympathies.

I live in Los Angeles and there are some disgustingly rich and arrogant and selfish people around here, so much so that it's mind-boggling, but I don't want to kill them.

Tax them maybe, but not kill them.
