I think a large portion is because of him. He did more to prop up bin Laden and al-Qaeda than anyone else in history.

1. No, I'd blame Bush I.

Reagan armed him, it's true. However, bin Laden wouldn't hate us for helping him fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. He didn't hate us until Bush I decided to build a US military base in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf War. That was Bush's decision and was what started bin Laden's crusade against the 'infidel occupation of the Holy Land'.

2. I blame RR, GHWB and GWB

But Reagan started the whole terrorist vs. freedom fighters mentality. The contras, who raped and killed nuns as part of their fight against the sandinistas (who overthrew a brutal dictator, Samoza)were "freedom fighters". I guess the Iranian radicals were too, although now they are considered terrorists.

Mostly, and until I see reason to believe otherwise, I blame Osama bin Laden for 9-11.
