Why hasn't inflation begun to spiral out of control?
The cost of fossil fuels is twice what it was a few years ago. Why aren't the costs of transporting goods creating inflation?

Why doesn't a carrot cost a dollar?

1. Corporations get perks until the * administration
That or the real costs haven't kicked in yet. :scared:

Or, because many goods can be transported in one big wheeler, net costs aren't as massive as we'd thought. Not yet, anyway.

3. It won't be long
before it spirals. It did in the late 1970s when the oil went out of sight.

4. I have wondered what is insulating the rest of economy from the effects ..
of runaway fuel prices and then realized that nothing is. Food prices, all energy prices, goods at the Big Box stores, whatever, seems to be edging up. Ground beef is 50% higher than it was 4 years ago ...

Seems to me like we're caught in a squeeze play and it's about to start squeezing.

6. for goods with inelastic demand, prices are already up
Drugs, gas, even food, have gone up dramatically. Cheap plastic crap from China is as cheap as ever and will continue to be so.

It looks like most Americans were not suckers when they tried to push ARM lately. It seems like most people locked in a decent rate. I guess American's aren't as stupid as they like to pretend.

7. The inflation index is rigged.....
Edited on Tue May-18-04 07:00 PM by whistle
...there should be a seperate inflation index for the poor, the middle class the rich and the ultra-rich. Then we'd see the proof of who inflation actually hurts most, the poor and the the middle class.

9. That's interesting
brings up the increase in sales and other "local" taxes. Shouldn't that be included in the index? After all, people are now paying more for the upkeep of their roads, schools and other community projects. An increase in taxes is an increase in costs. Is that not inflation?

8. It's beginning
I'm working on financing $2,000,000 in municipal bonds, and have seen the interest rates rise by .5% in a week.

That's the most movement in that span of time that I've seen in a number of years.
