I don't have any statistics to share, but when I drive on the highways now days, I see a lot less trucks. It is certain that these guys will simply park their trucks when they can no longer make a profit.

1. "fewer"
One of my pet peeves. And no, I haven't actually noticed fewer trucks, but then I'm not driving around a lot during the day.

2. No...

In fact, I tend to see more than ever before, but this is because I live near a major intersection with I-40 that has four truck stops that tend to have the lowest priced gas in the city.

There are relatively few independent truckers nowadays. The cost of the gasoline is absorbed by the trucking company and ultimately passed on to the consumer. A lot of these companies have contracts with various truck stop chains, i.e. the Fuel Man card, so that the drivers don't pay for the gasoline out of their pockets.

And diesel is once again cheaper than regular gasoline.

4. As one who works with trucks...
... I actually see more on the road. There are less independent truckers now, but there is an increase in the number of trucks on the road in the U.S., mostly as a result of NAFTA. More trucks from Canada and Mexico.
