With pictures of the sadistic sexual abuse of Iraqis in Abu Ghraib prison still spilling out onto the front pages, it is not too early to draw some conclusions.

The neoconservative hour is over. All the blather about "empire," our "unipolar moment," "Pax Americana" and "benevolent global hegemony" will be quietly put on a shelf and forgotten as infantile prattle.

America is not going to fight a five- or 10-year war in Iraq. Nor will we be launching any new invasions soon. The retreat of American empire, begun at Fallujah, is underway.

With a $500 billion deficit, we do not have the money for new wars. With an Army of 480,000 stretched thin, we do not have the troops. With April-May costing us a battalion of dead and wounded, we are not going to pay the price. With the squalid photos from Abu Ghraib, we no longer have the moral authority to impose our "values" on Iraq.

Bush's "world democratic revolution" is history.

Times are strange when an ultra liberal (like me) actually agrees with an ultra conservative like Pat on issues.

Bottom line: maybe we are the true patriots who really do love our country even though we approach issues from totally different sides.

A lot of people who would dismiss such an article by a liberal writer will actually pay attention to Buchanon. He gives conswervatives cover to do the right thing and oppose Bush*s fiasco.

I was shocked that time, when I heard that. We are not living in a totalitarian state!

Every time I'm in Germany I've got a lot questions about living here!
Germans like to discuss and the first thing I tell them:

DON'T CONFUSE 'THE AMERICANS' WITH "THE AMERICAN ADMINISTRATION!'
This opens always a door to a very good discussion, because I know both sides and somebody who is not living here, does barely understand, who "the Americans" are. I know it and that's the reason, we are here and don't go back!!!:toast:

except for the part about the invasion being brilliantly executed.

I've heard that said frequently. Sure, it looked like we were winning a quick victory early on, but was due in large part to the fact that Saddam's army didn't bother to fight - they were able to flee and spread out across Iraq. We're paying a price for that so-called early victory now.

It's incredible, but Buchanan has written quite a few excellent essays that do a better job of dismantling the neocons than most of what's written on the left. I've saved several of them, but this fairly lengthy critique of Frum & Perle's book is, IMO, perhaps his best.

On the dust jacket of his book, Richard Perle appends a Washington Post depiction of himself as the “intellectual guru of the hard-line neoconservative movement in foreign policy.”

The guru’s reputation, however, does not survive a reading. Indeed, on putting down Perle’s new book the thought recurs: the neoconservative moment may be over. For they are not only losing their hold on power, they are losing their grip on reality.

An End to Evil: How to Win the War on Terror opens on a note of hysteria. In the War on Terror, writes Perle, “There is no middle way for Americans: It is victory or holocaust.” “What is new since 9/11 is the chilling realization that the terrorist threat we thought we had contained” now menaces “our survival as a nation.”

But how is our survival as a nation menaced when not one American has died in a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11? Are we really in imminent peril of a holocaust like that visited upon the Jews of Poland?

30. Sometimes Patrick J. Buchanan can be enlightening, but other times......

watch out. I would say Nixon's old speech writer will be softened up enough to be thinking about what the "L" word really means by the time he gets to be about 90. But till he gets to the century mark I am still going to be skeptical
