9 gallons of gas for my VW cost $21! The only bright side was laughing at the SUV owners at the pump next to me.

1. 2.23 here in ORegon. At a Chevron last week...waited in a gas line
can you believe it? One time about 3 weeks before that, they were out of gas except for premium. BTW. I live in suburbs of Portland so this isn't a supply issue where I'm in the sticks. This is absolutely crazy!

2. Ha!!
In Britain, it costs me £45 ($80) to fill my car up (and no it's not an SUV - C Series Merc Diesel). You guys need to ratchet gas taxes way up so demand comes down - you're the worlds biggest polluter by a huge margin - that's got to change or we're all cooked.

7. Not a fair argument against those who have to travel a lot of miles
My neighbor barely gets by. This is a rural area. She has to drive at least 300 miles a week to keep the job she was lucky to get. Her truck is old; she can't afford a new one. It gets about 18 miles to the gallon. And she's one of the most ardent environmentalists I've ever met. Pulls weeds by hand instead of using chemicals, grows organic vegetables, et cetera. And she would never buy a SUV.

I warned people buying those huge gas-suckers that the day of reckoning was coming.

All that being said, you're right, Americans should pay more. But there are many of us who would prefer that the hikes in prices be related to the right reasons (environmental) rather than the wrong reasons (pig-headed politics).

3. Glad I have bikes
I feel somewhat fortunate that we have bikes and can get around if we need to without a car. But I'm also very well aware that not everyone can do that and the prices of goods are going to go up significantly.

6. A lady I know who owns a huge van was complaining to me
it costs $50 to fill up and, since she lives a distance away from work, it now costs a fortune. I don't know her politics, but my impression is she's probably a pug. I think people might be starting to figure out the chimp's little tax cut won't cover all these extra expenditures.

10. That's when they'll want another tax cut...
* will be more than happy to oblige.

Meanwhile, we're spending more.

Nobody's controlling the oil companies and keeping their greed in check. Compounded to that is the supply of oil itself.

Oh, it's going to get worse... and Bushko* is engineering it all...

8. That SUCKS!
I have to drive from Cleveland to Chicago, then to Madison, then back home this week. Thank the gods I have a Honda, but right now I sure do wish I could have afforded the Insight hybrid I wanted.

9. Still under $2 a gallon here for regular
Edited on Sat May-15-04 05:00 PM by scmirage
but not by a whole lot--$1.85-1.90 for regular, $2.03-$2.10 for premium--my car has to have premium--something about platnium points or something like that. It now costs me over $40 to fill-up. Luckily, I work from home and a tank usually lasts me about 4-6 weeks unless I have a meeting out of town or something.
