For party and country, Bush should step aside




All Washington is talking about whether the man responsible for screwing up the Iraq war should resign. I think he should. Not Donald Rumsfeld. George Bush. I think it's time for Bush to echo the words of that other president from Texas who bungled a war and then went before the country to announce, "I shall not seek and I will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your president."

The reporters will ask why he's resigning. "I need to spend more time with my family," he can say. That's the traditional excuse a politician gives when he must leave a job that is above his abilities.

This is certainly the case with George W. Like that other president from Texas before him, Bush turned out to be an incompetent in the field of foreign affairs. Lyndon Johnson at least had the excuse that the Vietnam crisis was thrust upon him and he had to react one way or another. But Bush chose to initiate a war in Iraq. It's always flattering to remake the world in your own image - as long as you don't have to do the fighting.

at the convention. My guess is that it would be McCain. He's the only one that would hold a snowball's chance in hell of beating Kerry.
