Fussell time?
Edited on Sat May-15-04 07:50 AM by secondtermdenier
I'm not a veteran and I'm more familiar with his more general social critiques (Class etc.) but I thought this aging cat claimed by both the left and right deserved a spotlight these days 1 2 3 4 . Additional links are more than welcome.

1. Thanks for the quotes
Fussell is always a great read, and his books on the mythopoesis of war are far more moving than any sentimentalizing on the part of combat virgins like me.

My father saw a lot of combat in WWII and Korea. He described it as being trapped in a war movie with a bad ending. "Nightmare" is another common figure of speech used to try to carry the feeling of hoplessness and the shock of unreason. Fussell doesn't just remind us of it, he forbids us to forget it.

Again, thanks.

And welcome to DU.
This post, alone, would establish your bona fides with me.
And thank you for introducing me to Paul Fussell, a man I do not think I would have known otherwise, and one I plan to get to know better.
You've me done a great service.

and the welcome. I try to seek and disseminate interesting stuff. It's hard to gauge who's heard of whom or what already. I'll kick this in case it got buried by Berg etc..

4. My favorite interview ever on C-SPAN's BookTV ...
was the one they did with Paul Fussell upon the issuance of the 25th-anniversary edition of his book "The Great War and Modern Memory." The interview initially aired a couple of years ago. I think you can view it online at booktv.org, or at least get a transcript.

He is a very interesting man with a lot of intelligent things to say. If you want to get to know him, I suggest watching that interview. Subsequent to that, I bought and read that book.
