Rep. King (R-Moran) blasts Vatican over Iraq comments
BY CAROL EISENBERG
STAFF WRITER

May 13, 2004, 8:44 PM EDT

U.S. Rep. Peter King expressed outrage Thursday at the claim by a top Vatican official that the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal was worse for America than the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"It's the ultimate hypocrisy," said King (R-Seaford), a practicing Catholic. "If there's anyone in the world who has no right to speak on sexual abuse, it's the Vatican. More than that, to equate this in any way with Sept. 11 is outrageous. And coming from people with such unclean hands, it is a disgrace."

King, who has been a steadfast supporter of the Iraqi war, reacted in an interview Thursday to published comments by Vatican Foreign Minister Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, who called the torture of Iraqi prisoners "a more serious blow to the United States than Sept. 11. Except that the blow was not inflicted by terrorists but by Americans against themselves."

Lajolo also described the scandal as "a tragic episode in the relationship with Islam," and predicted it would fuel hatred for the West and for Christianity, in the interview published in La Republica, a daily newspaper in Rome.

You think the neocon is correct? You don't think he tried to equate invading Iraq with 9-11?
The Catholic church may be nuts in many ways, but I think the Pope got it right here.

6. Actually
it sounds like the Church is trying to make the comparison, not King.

The Church has been doing just about as much politicizing as the Repugs on this one. It reads to me like King is calling them on it.

I've about had up to my ears with the Catholic Church, particularly hierarchy of the Catholic Church, insinuating themselves into our politics. Time to deny communion to those who may even go so far as to vote for a pro choice candidate but no condemnation for those who support the death penalty or the war.

3. King better watch it or he won't be getting communion.
Oh, I forgot- only Democrats get denied communion for their beliefs.

4. Wow, Peter putting his country before his God
Jesus, Isaiah, Jeremiah and John had some pretty harsh things to say about folks who did that. But I'll bet Mr. King really likes it when the Pope says some scared 16-year-old who had sex must pay the rest of her life and the life of the child she's forced to bear.

The strong overblown language ("ultimate hypocrisy," "outrageous") signals to me that Mr. King knows he's talking out his ass.

8. perhaps you should read a bit more then
This guy is a jackass. This US scandal
_is_ worse in global sense and long term for the americans, and this guy, shit, I was watching even the CNBC report on this man comments, _soon after he made them!_ and even this programme was comment 'this is one angry man', his words that absurd. (I like the CNBC international for business but in US I hate to see their politic usually). Dont let this jackass tie his 'practicing' garbage, and pathetic 'relation's he attempts into your conflict. The vatican is having a longterm vision of what is to be dread by all of us. We all have problems with such twisted arguemement and misuses, frankly "Americans against themselves", anyone whom would disavow this is a fool, certainly now and longterm.

9. I think the Vatican has it right this time
And King is furious because he loses his religious credentials by supporting the vicious terrorism done by the US.
