because I've heard it several times now.
Another one to watch for:
"...but then why isn't Kerry doing better?"
I can just envision what they're writing to promote this one, in an attempt to blunt the impact of the latest, increasingly unfavorable polls -
Item: Guest emphasizes latest polls that show bush falling behind, but only by a few points.
Suggested response: "...but then, why isn't Kerry doing better." Then add that Kerry is failing to capitalize on the temporary setbacks in Iraq, people don't like him, he doesn't have a message, he doesn't have a theme, campaign is shallow and weak.
I've also noticed a device used by the Pox network, where they showed two of the latest polls that both show bush behind Kerry, but adding in another poll that confuses the issue by showing bush at 51, I think, and Kerry down in the 40's. What they hope you DON'T notice is, in the upper right-hand corner, in smaller font, is "May 1 - 3, 2004." OKAY FOLKS. THAT'S MORE THAN A WEEK AGO!!!!!! HELLO!!!!!!!!! But they show it just long enough so you see the numbers, and they talk over it and portray it in the same breath, and the same context as the other polls. The INFERENCE is that these are three polls reflecting the same timeframe, hopefully planting the impression that - well, polls are screwy, don't pay them much attention anyway, 'cause, I mean, look how all-over-the-place they are! THIS one could well be as accurate, if not moreso than those other two!
The imaging and perception manipulation is absolutely at the doctoral level. It's subtle, sneaky, and snarky! From issuing those press releases "to the world" back in mid-January "and again in March" about the prisoner torture - in dreadfully small print, to the way they frame the questions and the phraseology. I mean, Larry King, Wolf Blitzer, and a host of others, undoubtedly received numerous faxes or emails to be SURE to "jump in immediately with - 'But aren't the Iraqi people much better off without Saddam?' in response to ANY questioning of US involvement in Iraq." Judy Woodruff, Candy Crowley, I'd bet money they've all received these guidelines and thoughtful suggestions to make their jobs easier. I've seen this as a reflexive reaction that you can predict, by now, whenever you hear somebody making a statement about Iraq - immediately comes that comeback.
UNTIL NOW. This argument has been shot out of the water by the prisoner torture and the Berg beheading. What THOSE prove is that now, NO ONE is safer or better off since Saddam was removed. NO ONE. Not the Iraqis. Not the Americans. NO ONE. That whole argument has been summarily flushed into the sewer system.
We could make a game out of this. A drinking game for some folks. Start watching for these cue lines. Listen carefully with a mental dissection tool when these anchors and interviewers confront the opposition. Listen for the same phraseology, the same lines used to react to the same arguments. The same similarly-worded attempts at rebuttal and sidestepping. It's deliberate, it's shameless and VERY transparent, and it's playing out all over the airwaves, wherever some media whore is still pandering like crazy for bush.
Hey! Fuck it! We deserve to start having a little fun with this! I'm sick and tired of being so damned depressed all week!
