Newsweek: "Women are sick of Bush and all the macho strutting"
The Gender Gap
Bush is falling further behind among women—and it could cost him come election time

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4980895/

"It's not surprising that the latest Bush campaign television ad has Laura Bush speaking on camera. A new Pew poll reveals a 12-point gender gap for Bush, enough to sink her husband in November. "Women are sick of Bush and all the macho strutting; it's gotten pretty old," says a Republican strategist."

"Bush is losing the hearts and minds of American women over his handling of the war, just as he has lost the confidence of the Iraqi people. Polls show 82 percent of Iraqis have a negative view of Americans. What's next in the Bush-Chaney campaign arsenal—a Laura Bush mission to Baghdad?"

107. What is with all the Babs=alcoholic comments in DU?
I do not recall ever hearing that Barbara Bush has/had a drinking problem, and I have not been able to find anything, outside of DU, that suggests it.

Anyone have any links that suggest this is anything other than a DU whisper campaign?

By way of explanation, I have personally watched pretty severe behavior problems develop despite extremely good parenting, I have a real problem with blaming the mom (or parents) for the children's behavior, particularly since the behavior attributed to mom in this case does not seem to be based in reality.

(This is a reaction to the many Babs=alcoholic, evil spawn of Babs, etc. comments I have seen posted here in the last couple of months - so my reaction may be out of proportion to this particular comment.)

He tries to act manly, but anyone can see what a lesser excuse for a human being he is. His put on isn't fooling anybody.

There is something not right about that man. Really, really, NOT right.

My husband didn't see it at first (he loves every Republican). I didn't push it, but even he is turning the channel in disgust when * appears. And I had NOTHING to do with it. I'm bizarrely happy about that. ;-)

35. I'm not saying she'll help the ticket
but I have a couple quick personal stories to share. Just to show that whether or not you agree with someone politically, you can have some respect for them personally & enjoy their company.

My wife teaches elementary education at a very exclusive private school in Chicago. Soon after 9-11-01, a producer from the Oprah show called to ask if she'd be on a panel to discuss how to explain the incident to children.

My wife went on the show, and was prominently featured and questioned repeatedly by Ms. Winfrey, much to her surprise. The special guest on the show was Laura Bush. (I think Gen. Clark was also on the show) My wife is very apolitical, but certainly leans left. She came away from her meeting with Mrs. Bush believing that she is a "genuine" person. A kind, caring person. From that encounter, I do believe that Laura Bush is a decent person. And yes, I do know about the traffic accident in Midland, etc.

Also, I personally met "W" in 1989. One of my fraternity brothers worked on the elected Bush's campaign, and he arranged for me to sit with W in the front row at a Texas Rangers game. A nicer man you could not meet. I only wish that I would have had the pleasure to meet other future leaders (Clinton!) in a setting like that.

Enough of my family's personal brushes with the Bushes!

45. I don't think she is a "decent" person
Have you ever, ever heard her express a single concern for the children of Iraq, even once? Their schools? Their healthcare? The orphans? She is the most powerful person in the world. IF she wanted to do good, she would. A "decent" person? She spent the last year "reading all of the Harry Potter books" according to her Xmas special. Is she trying to ban landmines? Or relieve hunger? Or collect wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs for the children her hubby has butchered? NOPE. Has she, the "former librarian", visited Walter Reed to cheer our maimed troops? Maybe bring a few books for them? NOPE. She is a national disgrace and I think your bar for "decent" is set pretty low.

48. In response to you
I misspoke. I am friends with one woman and she is one of the women who is in the group of women that Laura travels with each year, one of the girls from Midland. This woman is a good Democrat and adores Laura. Would she vote for Bush*? I will not ask her but I seriously doubt it. She knows Bush* well, has slept over in the Lincoln bedroom. I thought I should clear it up since I have spoken about this before. She loves Laura but something tells me it won't make her vote for her husband. Again, I will not ask her to make any statements as much as I would LOVE to know. I don't think she would talk anyway she is a good woman and a loyal friend.

Laura may be a decent person, she may be a really nice decent person but that is not enough for me to respect her or to ever consider Bush* may be better than I think because she stays with him. The Ewwww is my real, true opinion of her.

until they stab you in the back and steal all your money. there is a big discrepancy between bush's nonverbal and verbal communication.

he may have an extroverted, easy, informal social demeanor, but that doesn't equate to being a "nice" guy. that just means he can fake it with the best of them.

She took the snake in because he was outside freezing to death

After he warmed up by the fireside he bit the woman. She said why did you bite me you know your bite is poisonous.

The snake said to her, shut up silly woman you knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.

75. Welcome to DU, tcfrogs!
I think you are correct that in the right setting the Bushes come across as genuine and "nice people."

I caught only a part of Bill Moyers' program on Bush and Jesus (wish I'd been able to see it all) and I was startled that when he was actually in a church setting he seemed real. The way his fellow congregants in Midland spoke about him also seemed very real. I found my heart actually wanting to like the guy.

I was thus startled, even shocked, because the way his religiosity comes across to me in public life is calculating, hypocritical, erasing the line between church and state, imposing his beliefs on the rest of us, and dangerous. Wish I'd seen the whole show.

88. In my younger years
I hung out in places frequented by Mafia and union "enforcers." They were very nice people, too. Fun to talk with, friendly, and warm they were. I even met one of the "lieutenants." Also a very nice fellow to be around. Of course, he might have ordered a execution 15 minutes before I met him. He was eventually given a lengthy prison sentence. You had the feeling, when you talked with them, that they would do anything to help you out. I was smart enough to realize, being female ;-) that they were not people to mess around with.

Able to discern between what has been given by lucky circumstance, and what has been earned by one's own efforts
Ability to empathize with another's pain
Willingness to learn of another's worldview, even while not sharing it

That, to me, is a Real Grown-Up person whom I could admire. Neither the First Mr. nor the First Mrs. fits the bill in any way.

29. Macho, Schmacho. You can tell Shrub is a terrible lay...
Sorry to be so crude, but there it is. He's got small beady eyes, small hands, and walks like a duck. And since I'm as boy crazy now as I was when I was 14, well yes, I still make these consideratsions and where Shrub is concerned, it's a bad visual. I'm not surprised women are figuring out he is the same jerk-off that you finally wised up to way back in high school.

Now, I can say that when Clinton and Gore ran in 92, my girlfriends and I were quite enamored and were CERTAIN that they were both real men, unlike the boy pretender....

I guess it's not a great way to decide who to vote for, but hey, Laura Bush got herself a real dud, not a real dude!!!

...I've always felt that women were a better judge of character than men.

You really want to know someone's true colors, ask a woman. And I'm not saying that to kiss up, either.

To answer the question, yes. I was proud of women when I saw the article...that's why I posted it.

58. I never fell for him, either. Nor do I identify with his Stepford Wife.
Edited on Fri May-14-04 10:04 PM by calimary
I feel kinda sorry for her. Sometimes. She has to go home with him, and after November, it's NOT going to be pretty. But then again, she could have married somebody else. She could have resisted him, or at least seen through him. Who knows? There are many women who see their men, at least initially, as someone they can change (and improve), and perhaps she's one of those.

But heck, as some people have posted here, she's in a position to have done so much good. She could have been at least a little bit of an activist. As a librarian or one-time teacher, she could have spearheaded a book or save-the-libraries program, or a literacy program, or save-our-schools program or SOMETHING! Her husband is semi-literate, at best. As a teacher, couldn't she have done SOMETHING to help him a little? Hasn't she ever corrected him on his grammar? Or maybe she wasn't that alert or conscientious as a teacher, in the first place? If it were me (first of all, I'd NEVER have married a guy like that), I'd be all over him for his mangling of the English language. I am with my kids, all the time. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, everything. I try to be vigilant with myself all the time, too. It's important how your words speak for you, and what they say about you. His say things about him of which the ordinary person wouldn't be proud.

Oh yeah, and THANKS, bush_eats_beef! That was sweet of you! This adult female humanoid appreciates it! I've got a discerning, intelligent, sensitive guy at home who sounds like you. Wouldn't have it any other way! You're both quite correct, MOST observant, and HIGHLY evolved, by the way!

61. I'm a teacher
so Laura's lack of activism in educational issues has always angered me. I have never trusted her for that reason. What kind of a teacher allows herself to become part of an administration that doesn't respect children or teachers? She didn't even speak out when Rod Paige, her husband's employee, called us terrorists! Stepford Wife is right! You made some good points about her private motivations and how she may have at one time wanted to change*, but I think that's all over now. In a way, she's as bad as he is!

46. here's why
Women are waking up after the refusal to approve the morning after pill. Birth control pills are practically the same thing, and I am terrified that if he gets reelected that all hormonal birth control will be outlawed. Not only that, but woman are getting arrested for murder because they don't want a c-section, and today a woman was sentenced for a crime when her son committed suicide.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=718&e=10&u=/ap/20040514/ap_on_re_us/son_s_suicide

(sorry i'm new to this)

I am completely fed up, and I am getting discouraged by Kerry's failure to address these issues. We need a lot more than "I will only appoint pro-choice judges."

Also, one of W's first moves was to remove contraceptive coverage for federal employees.

70. What does Betty Bowers say about Laura Bush ? ...
From a Laura Bush Speech at Fort Bragg: http://bettybowers.com/lauraspeechbudget.html

-snip-

A lot of unpatriotic naysayers whine that the new budget is irresponsible in that it both spends fortunes on allegedly outmoded military stuff, while giving away money the government doesn't really have to corporations and other rich Republicans.

Like there is a problem with that!

(APPLAUSE)

Unpatriotic Democrats will tell you: "In this recession, we don't have the money to give away trillions of dollars!" Well, I have been with Bushie for many years now. I stood by his side when he started his failed business with Poppy's money. I was with him when he got the local government to pay $191 million to build a new stadium for the Texas Rangers he bought into with money from his daddy's rich friends. And I can tell you if anyone knows something about spending money you don't have, it is my husband.

(APPLAUSE)

Because of tax-and-spend liberals, we currently have a budget deficit that it is left to us don't-tax-but-still-spend conservatives to address. Some liars will tell you that the deficit arose in part because of all the money my husband gave away to Republicans by cooking the books to show wildly exaggerated surpluses. Well, we didn't hang out with Kenny Boy and not pick up a trick or two. America still has a huge surplus. It just happens to be in the Cayman Islands right now.

(APPLAUSE)

I was watching Fox News last night and some Asian woman who sounded like that Scientologist Greta Van Susteren was saying that there are Democrats who are evil enough to question my husband's budget numbers. There is only one word for the Democrats in Congress who don't want to give my husband every cent he is asking for: America haters.

(APPLAUSE)

When Tom Daschle speaks against enormous tax windfalls for the rich, well, he might as well put on an Axis of Evil uniform and kill all your husbands! Anyone who speaks out against this budget hates your husbands and wants them dead. They are not real Americans and we won't stand for them! Do you hear me? We Real Americans won't stand for it!

(CHEERS AND RIFLE FIRE)

-snip-

Indeed: Laura Bush on the stump would be very nice, iffin you know what I mean ...

I didnt say that ....

BETTY made me ....

77. Men Are Too!
This one is! Arrogance, Abrasiveness Selfishness, Untruthfulness, Greed, Childishness, Bullishness, Ignorance, Vanity, Cowardice and just plain Uglyness, are not qualities that cause me to warm up to anyone, male or female, very readily! And the constant smirk says it ALL! Watch them lips indeed! The entire Bush KKKlan has a lip problem, to go with their hateful sullen attitudes!

The only people that would like George Bush, imo, are people who also have these same serious unresolved mental issues and they see in Bush, someone in a very high position such as pResident, who exhibits these same bad qualities also! A leader like Bush helps them find self justification for their own shortcomings! In other words Bush is a horrid example for anyone, especially the younger American, who are is the process of forming his of her own lifelong personality!

It is very hard for me to be pleased with any other person who acts like Bush and has no control, over my life! When a person who exhibits the same bad qualities that Junior Bush does, has control over events that directly effect me, I have even less tolerance for their character flaws! In short I can not help but detest the man and practically everything he's done to me and to you so far!

The fact that GW Bush is probably easily the most detested person on the entire planet, indicates to me that I'm not the only person turned off by a man such as our own fearful misleader! I feel good, about feeling bad, about the National Idiot! I admit that! A HUGE Democratic Victory across the board in November, would make my feel bad feel better!

82. Maybe the DNC should make an outrageous ad mocking Bush's faux machismo.
If it is outrageous enough it would get free airplay on the news. It could show Bush saying "dead or alive," and "bring 'em on," and some other Bushshit and include pictures like this one from the carrier and then conclude with this picture of Bush working out the Iraq invasion plans (which I originally thought was a parody, but am now not so sure).
